View Full Version : JABBA chip swap
I've received varying reports about whether it's straightforward for someone with a standard 2001 Ibiza to install my JABBA chip. I know that the map is very much unique to one particular car, but Mike at JABBA advised that the differences are subtle and I've been told that a swap would be OK if the car getting my chip had a session on the rollers to optimise the map if necessary.
The other issue was whether the JABBA chip can actually "plug" into the standard ECU for other cars. On this one I've been told that the JABBA chip sits in a "cradle" that overcomes any of these sort of issues so that a swap to another 2001 Ibiza would not be a problem.
I've inspected mine and found that the JABBA chip does sit in some form of cradle/adaptor unit.
Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated. I don't want to waste mine or anyone elses time trying to sell the chip on if it's a no go.
just swap the ECU's over?
you'll need vag-com to sort out the imobiliser codes though

Wasn't keen on this route........heard some bad stories, so just wanted to swap chips.
what bad stories?
If you're confident that one of you can solder a TSSOP device onto a board & remove it without damaging the tracks / device then that's fine, but I'm sure it's worse than the worst story for ECU (like for like) swaps
Mark
PS - it is like for like isn't it? same ECU code?
a std ECU wont have the socket to enable the swap. the chit is soldered to the board.
ECU swap is the only 'real' option.
Unless you have the coccect kit - as mark says- to de solder a serface mount IC (thats Intergrated Circuit - not Inter Cooler)

Mine is not soldered to the board, it sits in a cradle/adaptor that plugs directly into the board without soldering and it's easy to open the ECU up and unplug it.
who had your ecu open before then?
and are you sure it's not already chipped as that is 'not std'

so the cradle isnt soldered onto the ECU board, or the chip isnt soldered into the cradle?

Chip soldered to cradle, then plugs, not soldered, into board
Not previously chipped.

That does'nt sound like a std ECU to me.
Not seen one which is anything other than soldered.

on a std ecu the chip is soldered onto the board.
When it is chipped, the std chip is removed and 2 'headers' soldered onto the PCB. into this plugs the socket.
If you have a cradle - its been chipped. a standard ecu WILL NOT have a cradle - or the headers to plug one in.

Yep.......it has a cradle. This was installed as part of the JABBA chip package, but I was told that this "unclips". Is this wide of the mark (ie: it seems from the comments above that the cradle plugs into a couple of pins that are soldered onto the board ?). Is it a problem to reinstall the original chip and how would JABBA do this ? Do they remove the pins they soldered on or just transfer the original map to the chip that sits in the cradle ?
