Hi all,

My other "family" car is a 06 Seat Altea 1.6 16v Petrol, done 47k. I think it's the same engine as in the Golf V, (BSE Engine code). Hasn't been used much at all in the last 12 months. It drives great but it has developed a constant loudish tappet like noise. Sounds a bit like an unrefined diesel. I assume this is the tappets but it doesn't get any better when warm and is more noticeable at higher revs (particularly when on motorway etc.)

I have tried some wynns hydralic lifter treatment and also changed the oil about 2k miles ago but it hasn't improved at all, Seat said it should get better with a few oil changes but I think it's more substantial than that. I am reluctant to spend too much on it - don't really have the money at the moment! Any ideas as to any other quick fixes (would fully synthetic help). If not any idea how much the tappets might be to replace and what kind of work is involved? Could it be anything else, damaged valve or timing belt slipped etc?

Somebody else has said that broken exhaust mainifold studs / bolts and thus a ill fitting mainifold can sound the same as tappets, I find this hard to fathom, but it would explain why it possibley gets worse when warm - has anybody else heard of this?

Lastly, if I just leave it is there likely to be any long term damage, and any good (cheap) engine places in the midlands to try?

Many thanks if you can answer any of the above.
