Audi Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG)

Looking at this as a possible option and wondered if anyone had first hand experience with this or has read any reports.

2 modes, one fully automatic, one manual with sequential gear change via gearstick or via gearshift buttons on the steering wheel.

Both performance and fuel consumption figures better than manual.

Thanks

ive been in a TT at work with it (passanger). the ride is so smooth you just accelerate straight on. but i have been told it feels slower as you arnt doing anything although it is quicker.

never driven one, but when evo mag tested the TT with 3.2 V6 and DSG box, they reckoned the box was the star of the show.

High praise given the accolades this engine has recieved in the R32 golf.

Benchmarked this new ASM box against a few other paddle shifting manual boxes. It good, but strangely feels a lot like an full autobox with manual override control. In fully auto mode it's excellent, with good shift quality and refinement, no better than a good auto box, but allows better fuel consumption as it doesn't have an auto boxes fluid coupling or oil pumps etc that absorb power. In manual mode is very good too, with a nice balance of shift speeds, slow when just pootling along, but a bit harsher when going for it.

So all in all it's good, but suffers from the whole ASM box problem of giving the driver less to do, sure ultimately it makes the car quicker, but a road car is not really about ultimate performance, (if you wanted to go that 0.5% quicker without a DSG box just chuck the A/C in the bin and stop and corner better too!), and for me these boxes still detract from the "skill" of being a good driver.

One of the best feelings when driving in a "spirited" way is to nail the perfect heel and toe shift into every braking point, pulling levers is fun, for about 5 mins, but soon pails into insignificance and just leaves you sat there whilst the cars does even more of the driving for you. It also removes all skill from the "traffic light" grand prix, just flick into sport mode, and when the light flicks to green just stamp the accelerator to the floor. computers do all the tricky stuff like getting the revs right / clutch bite correct, and off you go, with time to admire the scenery! (hence car feels slower than it actually is)

Much like the country that produced it, it's ruthlessly efficient, but rather dull!:p

(ps thats joke before anyone shoots me down for being anti german!)

:-o I read a detailed article on The Direct Shift Gearbox - DSG (http://mydreams.go.ro/art_direct_shift.html) (better than the one on the audi site), with great pictures, on:

I can`t wait to test it...
