Just what kind of performance can you expect from a standard TDI 110. I know you get 0-60 in about 10.5sec but what is the real world performance like? 30-70 through the gears, 50-70 in top etc. Also, on average what mpg would you get on a motorway versus round town.?

Thanks

In the real world my TDi 110 (with std chip running) will keep up with you average 115-125bhp 1.8 Petrol engined car if you are both thrashing it. On the other hand, if its gentle, but brisk progress (i.e. not using full revs, and driving more relaxed), its more on par with a 130-140bhp 2.0 petrol (i.e. Comparing my TDi with my Cousins Vectra 2.0 16v).

MPG is harder for me to compare cos I tend to put my foot down, but as a general rule, since I bought the car in March with 3000miles on the clock the average tank MPG has risen from 39mpg to 43-44mpg now with 30,000miles on the clock.
Weather seems to make a difference, I'm only getting low 40's at the moment with the cold snap.

To compare these figures with a petrol car, my last car, which was a company car, was a Primera 1.8 Sport, and in the same driving was returning 31-33mpg.

This is a rough guide to what I get:

Town: 40-42mpg
Motorway: gentle 80-90mph cruise to Scotland - 48mpg over 600 miles
Normal 90-100mph up and down M1 to my girlfriends - 43-46mpg
125mph cruise though Germany/Holland - 36mpg

Average since buying the car - 42.2mpg (not too good, but not bad considering I'm either travelling at 90-100mph, or stuck on the M25)

With the chip fitted I haven't really noticed a difference even though I drive the car even harder now.

"Real world" I'd say it falls between the 1.8 20V and the 1.8 20VT in terms of performance.

MPG ~ 40-ish around town.

Cruise 80mph ~ 50mpg

Drive to work ~ 5miles fun, 5 miles town, 5 miles motorway @ 80mph, then 25miles motorway @ 50-60mph I get regular 55-62mpg......which is better than I expected.

Thanks Guys just the sort of info I wanted. What is the engine doing on the motorway in terms of rpm? Say 80mph and 90mph. I guess it must be quite low to achieve the returns you are getting. Is the LeEon / Toledo Ttdi 110 fairly quiet because of this on the motorway.

I was thinking of getiing a V5 but I may have a go in a TDI before making my mind up. I am thinking of keeping my next car for a while and so the TDI may be worth considering as I would probably save quite a bit on fuel.

@ 90mph it is reving @ 3000rpm.

I have tested a V5 and was very impressed, I managed to get between 37 - 40mpg with the cruise control set @ 85mph, although in "the real" world this would be lower.

Economy V's Sound...................I know what i'd do if I had an extra £300 per month...............give the girl friend the TDi, and buy a V5:D

most economical on the motorway seems to be when your doing about 70mph @ 2400-2800rpm depending on incline etc.

Most of my commute is motorway with a bit of 20-30mph crawl and I average about 50mpg in the mornings. In the evenings when there are less tailbacks then I can normally get around 55-60.

About 550miles on £35 fill up (virtually a tank)

I'm a bit confused by your calculations, 55-60mpg on a talkfull, 550 miles....... this is what you call a tankfull...considering its a 55 litre tank.:D

*taken from my Excel MPG spreedsheet*

570 miles on 54.85 litres (12.07gallons) = 47.2 mpg

My tank best was: 524 miles on 48.81 litres (10.74 gallons) = 48.8mpg
worst was: 392 miles on 52.10 litres (11.46 gallons) = 34.2mpg

I get less on the country roads and the weekly shop than when i'm on the motorway. Also when there is a big tailback on the M25 (at least twice a week), so thats why over a week I tend to drop mpg, but on a resonable journey without major hold ups then thats what I get. I remember checking the long term trip at the beginning of last week and it showed an average of 49.? mpg so pretty close to your calculations.

I cant remember exactly what £35 is, I think last time I filled up is was about 48litres, so close(ish) to a full tank. (which does me a week),

For example this morning it was dog slow and I managed 47mpg. One day last week I managed 58mpg on the same journey going home, although it was about 70mph almost all the way. I'm quite light on the accelerator because of the mileage I have to do.

I have to fill up tonight, so I'll make a note and see how I do throughout the week

How could you tell you averaged 47mpg this morning?? Have you got a trip computer?? they normally over read by 2-3 mpg.

I should really cut down on my accelerator pressing, but I can't help it...... I normally get through 1 1/2 to 2 tanks per week depending how often I drive to work (me and my dad share) which is 90 miles round trip, and also if I use the car when I see my girl frind at wekends, which is a 300 miles round trip just there and back.

yeap, got a trip computer. :D

No idea how accurate it is, without running completely dry, suppose I'll never know :p

Why do you need to run completly dry....???? Just do as I do. This only works if you fill up each time.

Next time you fill up zero the trip mileage. when you fill up again take the mileage down (lets say 520 miles), take the amount of litres it took to fill up (lets say 50 litres), divide the litres by 4.5454 to get Gallons (11 Gallons in this case)
Now all you do is divide Miles by Gallons.

e.g:

520/11 = 47.27 mpg

Although you could be out be a few tenths of an "mpg" on one fill up, take this over 10 months (in my case over 75 fill ups). I have made a program in MS Excel in which you add you total speedo mileage, litres filled, price.

From this the program gives me: mpg, miles on tank, price per litre & total spent on fuel since buying car. I also add the petrol company so I can compare mpg for different fuels.

To make this all easier, I always pay by switch and write the mileage on the receipt, then you have all the info you need when it comes to inputing the data into Excel.:D

Had my SE since April last year and getting an average of only 42mpg!! Even driving like a monk only produced 46mpg at best.

Already had seat look at it and they effectively blamed my driving so may stick it back into them to check. One thing I have noticed is that it is now beginning to produce a definate lag and surge when the turbo kicks in, almost reminds me of my old nissan silvia with the lag, could be a sign that all is not well somewhere.

Neil (TDI 110), it is a difficult one - your heart keeps saying V5 your head says TDI which will win? I suppose I need to have a play with a TDI before I can decide. I originally wanted a Leon Cupra ruled that out in favour of a V5 and now thinking of the TDI. It is very hard to make up my mind.

I still really fancy the purr of the V5 along with the toys (leather & Sat Nav) but I am also attracted by the low down grunt of the TDI.

What is the main reason for you wanting the V5 is it just the engine?

Maybe the MAF sensor, so people keep saying. I've just bought some Isopropyl from the Chemist (70p) to clean it........
BTW, 42-46mpg sounds about right if worked out properly, VAG (and other manuafactures) trip computers always over read by 2-3mpg, as on my mates Bora TDi PD, and my Dads Galaxy VR6.

Are you coming to meet at the Galeria on Sunday? can take a look at mine, think I'll stick chip back in too as i'm gonna clean the MAF sensor on Saturday....

I love the sound yes (especially @ 7000rpm), but I also felt it had ample low down grunt, if not a match for the Cupra, it seemed to rev higher, easier (170bhp version I tried). Also, being just over 6' tall, but likeing my steering wheel set low I have to compromise the driving position, this means I don't get full support under my knees, the V5 with it's multi adjustable seat base is alot more comfy for me...nearly as good as my old Primeras!!! Obviously the V5 has better equipment too such as the Sat Nav, Leather and Cruise Control (std on the Toledo SE, but not the Leon)
Of course, I'd like to have the cake and eat it.....give my girl friend the TDi, and get a Toledo V5 for me......:D

filled up last night. On my last tank, I calculated that I averaged approx 49mpg

Last night, easy run 52mpg
This morning, busy but moving all the way 56.8mpg

(both journeys were all motorways 51 miles each way)

Probably about right, your probably lighter footed than me:D

All the same, don't reply 100% on the trip computer, I've never come across one that isn't al least 2mpg out.......

As yet the 6sp is not available in the Leon here, although the TDi 150 Leon & Toledo in Europe does.

The Toledo V5 revs at about 3000-3400 @ 70-80 (can't remember exact figure, but i did try it on test drive)

The Toledo V5 (170bhp) is a really nice car to drive by the way:D
