View Full Version : Pipercross Induction Kit
I have recently bought a Pipercross Induction kit from JB and I have been reading some shitty remarks about the Pipercross Induction Kit which has left me wondering whether I should fit it or not?
If It is high maintanence then It is not for me and especially if it might cause problems in the long run?
Any advice appreciated :(
Si
MAF???? :( :( :(
Please explain Brian or is it late at night lol!
Si
It's all been on here before.
Fecks up Mass Air Flow sensor, as does Damp Start, silicone spray, farting etc etc.
See other posts, fecked here at mo !! :D :( :D
I tell ya summat you start to follow a thread bouot summat and then it seems to start another one and then another one etc etc etc!
Yeah I read some of that.....dunno I guess that means that I have to ditch the Pipercross One..... JB if you read this help me out :(
Si
Does anyone know how you diagnose a faulty MAF sensor?, do you just wait till you notice the car not running properly?, or does anyone know the correct volage range that should be seen on the sensor outputs?
Would be nice to know if you can do summat about it as I am sure that Pipercross would have been told bout this problem surely?
SI
There was talk on the vwvortex forum about being able to clean them in solvent, people seemed to be reviving faulty MAF sensors in this way!
If you manage to get any info on that could you post it or mail it to me Mosser.......If it is okay and you can keep it sorted then I might still go for it!
Si
I couldnt find any specific info, but if you do a search for MAF on www.vwvortex.com you can read all the troubles people are having with them!,
As far as i can read, it isnt the oil that kills them, rather hitting potholes and large bumps that damages them!
Ta very much.......I will have a read when I get a spare minute and then decide what I am gonna do
Si
I hear that if you put a lighter grade oil on it - then that solves the problem.
Not sure how light, or anything, but that sorts it out.
si , daz widdowson has had one on for over 12mths now without a problem don't know if its oiled or not, i pressume the mk2 ibiza has one of these on the inlet ??? i have a piper x on mine and its oiled up and not had any problems myself perhaps the old ones are better

There is a big problem with MAF from Bosch, a faulty batch was produced, the connectors, the gold plating comes off, this does not matter with the MAF sensor itself but on the sensor is a hot wire system which is supposed to burn any oil faty material so that MAF gets a good reading.
Vw recalled over 2000 cars in the US, over here dealers are normaly replace the faultly batch when a car comes in for a serive,(UK VW saving some money, no big recall) I have left the part number of these units at work, will try and get tomorrow.
The blame was put on Cone filters, but stock cars are having there MAF also changed. The same thing happened with Mitsubishi a few years ago. If you over oil your filter it will cause a problem, but stick to oiling instructions and you should be O.K.
You can clean your MAF with a very high quaility cleaner, or best is Alcohol No drinking:cheers:

yesterday (friday) i fitted new air mass sensor 2 the cupra and again tried 2 carry out readiness codes. it looks like myself and my foreman may have jumped 2 a conclusion 2 quickly. admitedly there were traces of oil in the old sensor which as soon as we saw we thought air mass sensor. but the vehicle is still running the same with the new sensor on and we are still unable to carry out 1 certain operation on 5051 (pointing 2 a different fault altogther) we are yet 2 carry out any more tests but it looks like the fault is something else and NOT the pipercross induction kit as previously thought.
as jason said earlier on in this thread about another guy running a piper x. we also have a customer who has been running 1 for well over a year with no reported problems.
(it looks like i may have jumped the gun a bit, further checking on 5051 is required 2 find the problem)
soz if i have caused any probs for any1 else (sh@t am i appoligising!!) but i will keep u posted with what i find.
Good to see the SEAT training is as good as normal in Kent.
:D

going into brag mode, can't you use the 16v with a modded induction pipe???? mine sounds great and i havnt needed to wash or oil mine yet after about 8k!!
all i can say in my defence for the training side is that im no mechanic im just a lonely parts man.
i think coz of all the hype at the mo regarding this type of filter i just presumed air mass sensor with out investigating further.
hey every1 makes mistakes.
Guys,
Could one of you put a small explanation of how I would have to maintain the pipercross induction kit then please as I am no mechanic, parts guy either
Cheers.
Si
i still have no real idea how it should b maintained as regards 2 amount of oil if any.
i've also e-mailed pipercross 2 see what they sugest and if they've had any probs.
i'll let u know what if find out
ben
Ben that would be very useful....thanks and then I will see if I am gonna fit it!
Si
Si,
I've had my pipercross induction kit for some time now and I have never had any trouble with it . All I do is clean it and then lightly re oil it. I've checked the MAFF sensor twice last year and it's always looked clean, I've not noticed any performance drop off either since fitting it.
Daz..
Daz,
Cheers for that Its really good top hear somebody else that is not having a problem with it!
As I am not that mechanically minded I do not want to have something that is not easy to maintain etc etc....as long as I have the info of how to look after it then I guiess that It will be okay!
Many thanks.

Sorry.. forgot to say, This may be the cause of the code your 5051 is giving,
try this, it may help
Mic
Mic,
Just wondering what the price is again for the chip and fitting etc etc, I know that it is on here somewhere but cannot remember.
Also do you fit after a certain amount of miles as mine as only done 1200 miles?
Many thanks.

Hi... O.k pipercross have been with... Panel filter, Cone filter and the new Viper Induction kit. They have told as not to oil the filters at all! They work completely O.K without the oil.
I will post the dynos done on the day on our 1.8T.

The filter element is foam in the Viper?
How does this foam work without oil?
Hard to believe.
I have been caught out last year by non-oiled foam filter letting dust in.... Nasty and expensive engine wear as a result.

I asked the same thing... But only for the VAG 1.8T engine they are using a new white filter foam. Normaly i think it's a green layer, blue then red layer of foam, each one a little finer, but the new type of filters have a final white stage, which is supposed to stop extra fine parts without the need of oil.
Bloody VW/SEAT MAF's, it's the wire connectors which have caused this MAF to go bad, even been told the wire harness is also a bad part.
Viper does have a inverted foam cone inside the carbon fibre housing,

Even if the Viper does have a layer of foam that can stop even the smallest particles in, then surely all that will happen is that you will get buildup of these partiles stuck to the filter. Can you wash them or do you have to just put up with this increasing layer of crap which will gradually reduce the useful surface area of the filter?

You can wash them in petrol etc.. but its messy, and in my experience, the hot old cycles these things see, breaks down the foam after a couple of years, so they become brittle and actually start to create dust they are there to stop!
This is based on my usage of ITG foam filters over the last 5 years..... I replace mine (4) on the Jetta every year.

Hi..
Pipercross have said that"the pipercross filters when oiled will stop particles down to 5 micron.. when dry they will stop particles down to 15-20 micron.. they are currently working on a dry filter which will stop 5 microns without oil.
To clean any dry Pipercross filter it is recommeded to wash in clean soapy warm water and allow to dry naturaly.
I also asked about dry filters brecking down and bits falling of, I've heard alot of problems with dry HKS filters on scooby do this, they told me that the filter should not do this because the way it is constructed, but if it should, just call Pipercross has they are covered by a life time warrentry.
Hope i ask them all the questions you wanted to know. opp's yes SEAT Ibiza, Seat Cupra and all Seat TDI's are available in the Viper range.
