Hi Guys,

Before I kick off, just to say that I have had a browse through the forum and it is brilliant - very freindly people with great advice.

I have a few questions ...

I am slowly upgrading the ICE in my Ibiza 1.4 cls. I have a Sony CA580 MD HU, with the rear speakers being JBL's and the front being the standard fit. The sony and the JBL's were installed by me, with the next things to be upgraded are the front speakers and a sub. Authough not a stranger to sound and electronics (2 yrs touring with a band, Pro Sound Engineer, before starting Uni) I was wondering if you guys could offer me some advice :

1. What size are the front dash speakers in my car, and can I get a DECENT pair of replacement ones to fit? I have looked on the car audio direct webpage and they only specify the door size (I don't have speakers in the doors, just full range in the dash) and Halford's didn't know either ;)

I don't want to fit components, just some decent replacement front dash speakers. And ones that will easily fit in, rather than having to powertool parts of my dash :)

2. I am also going to fit a sub - I know I need an amp to power it, but I was wondering about the practicalities of running the cables.

Do I need them down different sides of my car (Power 1 side, Audio the other) or will they be OK together ? How do you hide them ?? - any pictures or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for you time, and helping a newbie kit out his first car (and what a car it is !).

Rig.

For ICE Advice you've come to the right place mate....:D :D

First off I'm a bit confused as to why you don't have any door speakers. The standard speakers are a 17cm mid in the door and a tweeter in the dash. Unless the 1.4cls is different, but I didn't think so. To get to the door speakers look under the front bottom corner of the door pocket and there is a small screw. Remove this and you can then pull off the speaker grill.

You could though fit a 4" coax in the dash holes but it'll require a bit of work. No company makes custom fit full range speakers in the dash as the standards are components.

As for the sub wiring just remove the passenger seat. Undo the bolt just under the front and then slide the seat back until it comes out of the runner. Then remove the passenger side plastic mouldings around the door. most pull off and theres a screw or two about and they're easy to see. Then feed the signal/remote cable under the carpet allong the transmition tunnel and tape them down and run the power cable along the cableing under the door. Then replace the plastic bits and the seat. All done. It should only take about 3 hours even if you've never taken you're car appart. I'm so used to it now I can strip the whole interior out ( and put it back ) in about an hour.

If you need any other help just shout.

Thanks for the replys guys ... things are becoming clearer ....

How do I get the power cable into the cab ? Do I somehow feed it from the engine into the cab ?

Any suggestions as to what to do with my front speakers, then ?? I *defnately* don't have components - just full range in the dash. Anyone had any experience with this ??

My brother has a couple of JL Audio 10W0 Subs in a box for sale if you are interested. £125 o.n.o. You could leave em in or take em out, once there yours you do as you please!

In the passenger side footwell, under the dash there's a rubber gromet you can run the power cables through into the engine bay. Obviously you'll have to lift back the carpet a bit to find it.

Could you not source some door cards with speaker mounts in from a breakers/salvage, it might save you butchering your ones!

mate, Ive got 2 12" subs in the boot of my 1.4 SXE.

The weight of which, effects the handling of the car slightly, and u get more role with the car round corners, and it can possibly feel slightly more sluggish. This is cos the weight is behind the rear wheels.

The power cable is run through the little rubber grommet directly behind the battery.

The power and remote wire should be run down the passenger side, can slide the wires under the plastic trim that runs along the bottom, just infront of the door seals.

Audio cables have been run down the drivers side.

Id recommend one sub, as the weight does play a part. A 12" is a good comprimise. Go for a 15" VIBE if u wanna shake house windows ;)

Hi,

Thanks for all your help and posts.

I have sucesfully wired up my ibiza, and found the "Grommet" which is the key to it all !!!

Wired the positive lead and the remote down the passenger side, and the audio down the drivers side. All appers to be ok. Tested it out by putting my brothers pardigm home cinema sub in my boot - the car nearly fell apart !!!

I am now waiting for my sub and amps to arrive from the internet ....

I am also looking at getting the door pockets fitted on my ibiza, and installing some components.

Thanks for all your help,

Rig.
