i've read alot of threads on here about the heatsheild rattle at certain revs that can be fixed by welding or screwing?? into place. can someone tell me which bit it i that usually causes this problem.

Had it for a while now at 3500 revs, kinda got used to it, but just started a bit louder at 2500, so time to get underneath and fix it now, before the snow comes.

On the 16v it's most often the one on the downpipe. It is an integral part of the downpipe so for a proper weld back job the downpipe needs to come off. You can try 'clipping' it tightly using some jubilee clips. Mine was tmp fixed at the beginning of the summer but is gradually getting looser and louder.

I've also heard that removal of the downpipe heatshield can mess up your gearchange ... this might be a slight prob for me (but I doubt it cos the shield is still there) or it could simply be slack cables.
