Don't think I will be buying another Seat.

3 Coilpack Incidents, all 4 replaced. Now the engine management light has come on and it won't go above 1100 revs. All in 24k miles on a car only just 2 years old.

Also no dealer in Newbury or in close range with a clue, so it's off to the good boys down at Great Covert Seat.

That's it for me, something else next I reckon.

:(:(

i know how you feel.
I have owned my Ibiza Cupra for ALMOST 3 months now.
6 weeks of that the car has been at the dealers, and a further 2 weeks i could hardly use it as the coilpacks went and i was waiting for a book in space at my local dealer.
Thats 8 weeks out of a possible 12-13weeks...
great.
again, its only 21k miles, and under 2yrs old.

Considering the value for money SEATS represent, compared to any other car in the VAG range, I will certainly be buying more of them!! VW badged cars have a stupid and expensive extras and options list, with very few value added features as standard, Audi are too expensive, and Skoda still have to struggle (albeit not so badly now) with the brand image. SEAT gives you all the features and options for very little money on generally very reliable cars!!

To be fair, the coil pack problems happened across the range of VAG cars and were a total c*ck up as far as quality control and customer care goes, but every company makes mistakes as do all us individual humans! I'd just fight for my warranty rights and relax.

I think SEAT is a great brand with a good future. :)

 must have had a bad day cos he didnt know how to fix it:D )

dianostics test warned of 10 faults :o
suitable parts ordered and should be with us by sat morning
unfort. i am unable to complete the job myself due to being on hols

Kevin - Yeh all sorted I think. Only thing that worries me is the hire car business. I'm on the Seat Assistance 48 hours crap, but if the parts are only in Saturday, I will need the car for a couple more days. How do I go about this?

Seat Apprentice - Yeh sounds like my car! So what was the problem with it?

Cheers for the replies guys.

a new trottle valve has been ordered, at the cost of £220 thank god for warrenty eh.

unfortunatly due to the time we got to look at even if we put the part on priority order it was to late to get them for friday.

as regards car speak to service department we MAY have curtisty car u can use until ur car is fixed the only trouble with this is ur distance i can understand u may not want to travel all the way here just to pick it up. im sure something can be arranged though!

i was also going to say from looking at you mods could use some minor advise to take full advantage:D main thing though is i would advise refitting the original bonnet switch for the alarm

Cheers IAN

Ian,

What sort of advice would you give and that is the original bonnet switch for the alarm! :D

Thank god for warranty's for sure!

I don't mind travelling to get a car but like you say hopefully something can be arranged. Maybe just as easy for GC to pay the AA/National Rent a car the price of £27.50 a day and claim it back from Seat?!

well the very first thing i notices were the wires hanging down from the dash towards the pedals!
next was the nice manifold on the rear bench, next was the nice power cable for ice, which was i nice size till it reaches within 6" of battery then it went silly small! it is poinless having it that big if ur gonna use tiny bit, as it is only as good as its weakist part.;)

anyway back to the bonnet switch i had to remove it to check the wiring behind the scuttle trim and to be honest i would rather not refit it in the manner it was before?

You do whatever you think is best!

The Manifold on the back seat is sold. It's a Janspeed 4-1 branch manifold for a 1.6 16v Ecotec Vauxhall Engine. :D

I've never changed the bonnet switch. Just probably squashed it when I put the strut brace on. If you wanna re-fit it, feel free. I also have a fuse block sat here on my desk that I have meaning to fit for ages, along with some thicker wire!

But I always come over all 'can't be arsed' as the car aint mine! :D

As for the wires near the pedals! :D lol, never been able to get them to stay up. Must use a cable tie one day before I get a new car!

Seat Apprentice
04-12-2003, 23:15
im sure i can find u a cable tie;)

oh and just incase ur worried ur car is tucked up inside the workshop 2night as couldnt be bothered pushing it out lol!

feel free to get in touch if theres anything u need.

To be honest, that's why I take my car to GC cos they are imo one of the best dealers around.

As always and as you've seen they are extremely helpful and will no doubt get it sorted asap but I'm not sure if I will get another Seat. Have to see what around at the time come renewal time.

Dor - secondary cooling pump and throttle control valve are the 2 main issues. Don't know if you will have the same problems as me, as I think mine are all speed bump related! I drive over at least 10 a day and with the R being so stiff I'm sure it can't be good for the poor thing.

Ian - I picked up my courtesy car from GC on Saturday morning, as Seat UK wouldn't extend my hire car from Enterprise :( . Funny really they said cos the parts weren't on back order they wouldn't do it. Thing is I drove the Zafira down to GC from Newbury, only for someone from the Newbury Enterprise to drive all the way down there to collect it!! Where's the logic?! £27.50 a day the AA's rate on the car, don't make sense to me!

Still we'll wait and see and for now, ph34r my 1.2 12v power! It's even got dual controls cos it was going to be for a driving school!

Anyone else think a 1.2 12v sounds like a Porker when you push it hard?!

Seat Apprentice
08-12-2003, 09:25
oh yes the secondary water pump, i noticed the coolant was low and was looking around for the dreaded pink crusting and i noticed out the corner of me i tucked up under the slam pannel the s/water pump was leaking from its casing so only made sense to order it up aswell

Looks like a good dealer to me.... bit scary that they're on the forum though - time to edit my sig ;)

Frosts in Shoreham have been great with me thus far and apart from the fact that my car's paint chips when you stare at it I'm very happy with my purchase!

Thanks Ian. I'm hoping to hear something back today about my car. Fingers crossed :)

as far as mods go, wat is see and hear on here have no bearing on my work and even if i did see ur mods list i would prob forget anyway
also i have no bearing on warrenty dicissions
the dealer from my point of takes a "reasonable" view on mods

Mine have been cool too....they were very interested in the chipping aspect :)

Pity no dealer I've spoken too will agree that the paint quality is crap tho :(

knowing my luck, your probably right.

Just had an update. The new trottle valve didn't fix the problem as it's the throttle pettentiomiter (???) or near the pedals?!?

Anyway, looks like at least Thursday/Friday before she's fixed :(

I think we have all been there with Seat UK. ANd the 5hitty 2 day AA car hire then nothing uless you parts are on back order cr@p.

What Seat faill to realise is that we all understand when cars break down after all they are relativly complex bits of kit built by divots mostly :)
Its how they and the dealers deal with the problems that really makes car ownership a nice experience.

Seat dealer are generaly some of the worst i have ever come across, and i own a Golf and had an Audi before that, so its not just VAG problems.
The blame must lie with Seat UK at the end of the day.

Not sure i will buy a new Seat again, prob right now only the Altea would tempt me as a new for my wife to replace the golf.

Just got my car back and oh how I missed it!

Parts replaced:

Throttle Valve
Throttle Petentiometer
ECU
Secondary Coolant Pump
Outside Temerature Sensor (not realated but been broke for months!)

Feels really weird to drive it again after the VX Zafira x2 and the Mk4 1.2 12v Ibiza I had. Steering is heavy, clutch is heavy, throttle travel is really short and the pedals feel in the wrong place! But it does pull like a train. :D

Good to have it back.

Big thanks to all the guys down at Great Covert in Southampton, once again Diamond fella's.

Cheers

I know what you mean- when i got mine back 1st time round the steering felt really heavy in comparison to the electric power steering on the mk4 beeza, and same for the clutch, but it gives an all round much better feel!!
Glad yours is back working again:)

well, actually yeah, my dad has been phoning them every day this week now, and will do untill the car is ready. He told SMC he wants the car in the workshop everyday untill its fixed (which is only fair in my opinion!)
They have now found its not an actual wiring fault, its the fuseboard, so one has been ordered and is on its way. lets just hope that this is the fault, because we've been though all this before 3 times already..
1st was abs pump
2nd was abs ecu
3rd was wiring
fingers crossed eh!:)
Cheers for asking

Mate that's seriously harsh. At least you haven't suffered the pain of the famous Coilpacks, assuming you haven't!

I've had that 3 times too :(

once was at 5:40am when I got up early for a meeting in Newmarkey at 8am. Was pissing it down too, like serious lashing it down, did the whole Journey in the Mini! :D

Made me laugh that a 40+ year old design car, with mechanics from at least 10+ years old could be faultless over something that was then 6 months old!!!

Copra
18-12-2003, 13:31
That sounds like a right pisser mate! why do things always go wrong when you least need them to!?
oh dont worry, ive had coilpacks too!!
all 4 have been changed now though, so hopefully i wont get that again...;)

Looking more and more like I'm not going to be getting another Seat as well. Six months I've owned my Ibiza Cupra, and there have been problems of one sort or another with it for all but about a month of that period.

Engine has been running fine for the last 3 months, but 2-3 weeks ago started playing up again. GC reckon that the car has been steam-cleaned at some point, causing the wiring loom contacts to corrode, which is currently causing the lambda sensor to not report the correct data.

They need to speak to Seat technical, but they reckon it may need an entire new wiring loom, which might take months to make/arrive. In which case I think I'll be looking at rejecting this car and buying something more reliable (like an Alfa, or something. :D)

(Can't praise GC enough though - they always knock themselves out to try and fix it, and just when they fix one problem, another one turns up :()

Somewhat bizzare as yours is an early one and they don't even use the fitted rear Lambda probe in the ECU calculations.

I'm sure there's checks in VAG-COM that does Lambda probe based checks as well.

Might nip round at some poit to note that actual fault if you go for a drive.

Nobber - NEW ECU? Sounds like someone at GC has a project going on....
