View Full Version : Rear brake disc lifespan ?
I have just had my Leon 20VT in for it's 20K service, and it has had to have the rear disc's replaced. The garage say that the disc's are badly scored. I presume this is partially due to a sticky hand brake.
Should I expect to replace the disc's every 2 1/2 years ?
Most driving I do is on the motorway and the car is kept in a garage.

No, I've had mine on for 2+yrs and 150K km and they are still good.
Since 30% or less of your braking is done in the rear they should outlast the front discs.
its a common problem. Found this out when my dads mk4 golf went in for this to be done as it lost alot of the outside lip of the disc.
The problem being that it picks up a load of crap and the brake pads dont slide on the little metal plates they sit on, thus the brake trails and wears the pads and disc more than ever.
My dads had a small lip around the outside which would have lost him about 20% braking surface.
We bought new discs from GSF and did it ourselves, saved loads of money.
So best bet is to take your rear brakes apart and check the efficiency, ie how well the pads slide.
Thanks Stew,
Maybe it's due to the amount of water at my feet ooozing through the floor. I have also suffered the common leaking door problem. I only noticed last week that infact the passenger side carpet was sodden.

I do know that the 1st golf iv had problems with the pad compound. Seems it was too soft and wore out much faster than the fronts.
The mk4 chassis which includes the leon/toledo also has no front/rear proportioning valve like the older cars did. This means you can bias the brakes further to the front or rear.
