View Full Version : VW Announcement RE: Creaking suspension
Found on UK-Polos.net:
On the 15/12/03 VW issued a technical bulletin to all VW dealers stating that they are currently 'aware' of the complaints of suspension creaks from new Polo owners and that VAG Germany are working on a replacement kit as we speak. These 'kits' are expected to be ready for late January/early Febuary 2004 and are of course covered under VW warranty.
It is not yet known if these bushes are going to be issued as a recall, workshop campaign (fitted as cars come in for service/repair etc) or replaced when the noise is noted by owners.
Dealers have been instructed NOT to carry out any warranty work on suspension if the complaint is either creaking or knocking noises. Therefore if you book your car in for the creaks don't expect anything to be done about it until the kits are availiable.
More updates to come as we get them.
Many thanks,
The UK-POLOS.NET forum.

I've noticed mine creaks a bit, does anyone else have this problem ?
the only creaking I remember is when using the brakes while going backwards down a slope (a horrid vibrating/moaning type creak), I assume that actually comes from the brakes though?

Yup, that seems to be a VAG 'feature' - does it on all 3 of ours
Less of a creaking, more of a squeaking though :p
My old one creaked loads, I thought it was just me though.
Mine does. I asked the dealer to look at it in Sept, I think they just lubed the bushes. It was ok for a bit but I knew it would come back & it has.

Yup thats a common problem across the VAG range. Audi had the same problem on the A3. They issued a bulletin and a damper weight was fitted to the rear brake caliper to stop the noise.
I'm guessing they assumed dealers could fob off the lesser brands.
I have the same problem and im trying to get the part numbers of the damper kits for the A3. They should fit the Ibiza/Fabia so when I've found em i'll let you lot know.
They are quite easy to fit, the are just a rubber donut bush that bolts onto the caliper around the handbrake linkage.
Keep us all updated Ross (and might be worth putting it on Briskoda too).. i noticed my rear suspension creaks abit too :(
It will probably be the rear brakes Colin.
Have copied and pasted on Briskoda aswell :)

Not exactly creaking, more a muted crunching kida noise fom the rear, noticible more on speedbumps...
Hmmm....
Glad to see you Ibiza peeps might have things sorted though!! :)
My Córdoba's rear suspension creaks when it's colder (like when it's below zero). I don't hear anything in the summer but will have to complain about it next winter especially if they have a fix for it by then.
BTW, some of the sigs here are siiiick! :-o Like, the sig makes your posts 3 times longer!
Edit: Well, I don't seem to be much better, either. Why is the font so big now??
Edit #2: OK, better now.

Going back to the creaky front suspension - anyone know which bushes are causing the noise ?
YIP, had my ARB bushes replaced under warranty 2 months ago, and that was only after 4 trips to the dealers to try and trace it and trying things like greasing every joint they could see. It was well documented on here, and it only appeared when the car was warmed up, extremely noticable on low speed sleeping policemen and fast (50+) undulating B roads.
Its characteristics for my car was that it was much lounder in the de-compression of the front of the car, so when it was compressed in a dip in the road there was less to hear but when it sprung back up it sounded like the end of a sheet of metal being rubbed with a rough file.
It's on
HERE (http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=26102&highlight=creaking) if you want to hear it going over a sleeping policeman.
It still happens very occasionally, so i'm not convinced that it wont come back again, but at least now people arent staring at me thinking the car a heap.

Ah! So I'm not alone! I noticed my Ibiza's suspension creaking over ondulations at low speeds a few weeks after taking delivery. It went back to the dealership to have the problem looked at, though their seemingly clueless solution was to drop and re-fit the rear suspension, which cured the problem for a week before it gradually reappeared again. I asked again for noise to be examined at the car's one-year service, at a different dealership, who greased the rear suspension bushes under warranty, which has done sweet F.A. to cure the problem. So, for the time being, it seems, I have little option but to put up with it, irritating though it is. Please keep me informed of any publications/info from Seat regarding this problem, as I'm keen to see, or rather hear, the back of it!

Ditto, the old grease 'em up trick did sweet F.A. for us as well. We've never owned such noisy cars, LCR and Beeza could do sound offs for rattles and squeaks.
Beeza has got better with dirt and age, but maybe we're just getting used to it. My missus says my @r$e squeaks too much. Anyone got a uprated bush for that?

Does anyone know whether the kits are out? Mine's a 1.2 had it for 4 years now and got these creaking noises over (speed bumps mostly) on the passenger's side. It's quite loud and embarrassing especially when people are around. Thanks ;)
I was thinking about the creaking on my Cupra the other day (I posted this before it was even built!) and it needs to go in for a few bits so I will ask about it.

hmm.. is there any creaking suspension owner here mechanically minded enough to be able to shed light on what it might be? Just got my Kw springs but I am not so sure whether to put them in place since I've got a feeling that they'd make matters worse. Just asking so that if the kits aren't available, then the only option is to have a go at an aftermarket part if it's available... anyway excuse my lack of knowledge. Looked up in ElsaWin and its troubleshooting guide ... and under 'noises from front of car', the only thing that had to do with squeaking/creaking was:
Problem description:
Squeaking noises from front axle oscillating arm silentblock
Cause:
Composition of silentblocks unsuitable.
Friction in silentblocks.
Production solution:
Ensure silentblocks from the same supplier are fitted to the oscillating arms on both sides.
From 05.04, chassis number: 4R 230110
Service solution:
Fit new silentblocks
TBH I don't know exactly what these are or what's their function... i'm gonna' try a search on google
My car was in for a service 2 weeks ago and to get the suspension checked for the 3rd time due to knocking/creaking. The mechanic admitted to me that seat had now admitted there was a problem and the bushes would be replaced. Certainly improved it........................ for now.

coilovers sorted my creaking out :D
Mines terrible too, seems to creak over every bump. Turning right I seem to get a loud knocking noise, as if something is loose. Its been in the garage numerous times but they keep saying all is fine.
Its either a crap design, poor quality or the garage is lying to me and something is up!
It even made me consider getting shot of the car, bu then I realised I cant afford to LOL

well chase, the loud knocking on turning might be a ball joint. My dad's car (a vw passat) had to had the ball joints replaced at only 32000 km. The rubber somehow came off thus opening the seal to the exterior elements especially water and made the car do the knocking on turning... well hope that might help:shrug:

and rash, would that mean that fitting kw dampers and springs might sort the creaking out? That would be a great excuse ;)
Mine squeeks and rattles like a good un. Not long had it back after the last time it was in. All they did again was take it apart, screw it back together and grease it up. Lasted a good 200 yards
It going back in at the end of the month!
And im looking into coliovers once I change jobs, as I'll have no speed bumps to commute over :D

That was a known weak point that affected a LOT of Passats - not a common issue on the Ibiza though.

I to have had this problem. But mine seems to creak then squeek on the drivers side front suspension. I've had two different mechanics look at it and said it looks fine. I agree its embarassing when you drive past people sounding like your suspension is going to break any minute. Also if i ever go to sell the car who would buy it with what sounds like crap suspension.

I've also got this problem... my mechanic says it might be a top mount issue?
edit: drivers side as well!

I had the same problem, at first it only did it when the front dipped after easing off hard acceleration. When back to the stealer, they couldn't find anything, but greased everything round the suspension and it went. But it came back so I went back to stealer and they said the engineer couldn't hear it. I got in the car to go home and hear it straight away. But if they can't find anything wrong nothing is about to break, I'll just have to put up with it. Then it got really bad, did it all the time so I went back again. They found it was something like the rear track control arm bush (creak was front driver side). It was a few days out of warranty and although I had been several times they said it wasn't linked to the creak I reported before and would not support my warranty claim. Shame I was not on this site then or I would have had more evidence. I don't use that stealer any more. I’ll check my receipts for the part they changed and post details tomorrow.

Yes its a pity that you hadn't been on these forums, the proper fix for what you had should really have been a visit to your nearest independant VAG specialist for him to replace the bushes on both sides with the Ibiza Cupra solid ones - the crappy normal voided bushes tear again very quickly and the whole job and money needs to be repeated again!

Mine squeeks and groans like a good un but only when its parked up and you get in and the suspension gets compressed.

I had it done in 2005 but I have noticed a click when I take my foot of the accelerator recently. It sounded like it was the pedal and is different to the creak, but it might be that bush failing again :(

The invoice doesn't help much. The description is CONSOLE ...r/f tca arm
It cost £62.25 ex vat and labour. But it does have a part number the dealer could look up to find out what you want them to check.
It is 6Q0199294D

That's naughty, someone was being a whimp there and could not or did not trust themselves to just change the bush - there is a history of clumsy folk cracking the console when inserting this bush - but there is a VAG mandated tool set to allow just the bush to be changed. The point is, if you dont have a Cupra, then changing this console like for like is never going to give you a proper fix. The non-Cupra console is never supplied with a Cupra bush!
