View Full Version : Toledo V5 (170) MPG poll
I'm really interested in getting a second hand V5 (170BHP).
Although really tempted away by the Octavia VRS, Leons and 3-Series,
they are still holding their money rather well.
But the Toledo V5 after 2 year old is a bargin cosidering the equipment list, I've seen 2-3Yr old examples with above average miles, for around the 6K mark.
But is this going to be a false economy, the obvious questions are what are everyones average MPG, are they reliable, are parts cheap and what are the service costs like?
P.S Does the V5 sound as good as other people make out?

On shortish journeys I get 25-30mpg. Longer journeys will see 35-40mpg, especially if the cruise control is used.
The V5 engine really does sound brilliant - I often hold it in gear just to hear the noise. :D
It does sound very good - sounds refined and expensive. 20VTs in comparison have a very dull engine note.
The V5 is a cool car! used to average 28 mpg which was a mix of motorway driving and sat in traffic!!
The engine sounds fantastic, in fact it's the only car I've owned and not had the stereo on full blast. The only problem with the car is the SEAT delearships who are absolutely useless, I traded in the V5 two weeks ago and bought a Mazda 6 this was due to the fact that it broke down twice because of the faulty ignition coils. And I got bored with ringing them up for three weeks at a time to get things fixed :o
The car is great but the dealers are crap!!! Don't think SEAT know what customer care means
I get pretty much the same consumption as Jacknelle, usually 26-27mpg round town, but the traffic's so bad round here I often don't get into top. Motorways I get comfortably over 35 to the gallon as long as I stay around the low 80's. You need to cruise in the very high 90's to drop the consumption below 30 on a run. I've never known a motor that uses so much more fuel around town but I suspect half the problem is you can't accelerate gently in it 'cos it sounds so nice.
It might sond a bit harsh but I think we had more probelms with the V5's than any other Leon/Toledo.
Coil Packs (not the same as 1.8T ones though)
Lambda probes (very common)
Flooding (usually due to above)
Water leaks (also applicable to Leon though)
Sat Nav faults
Boot lid jamming
And on earlyish V5's the bottm crank gears wernt made correctly and fell apart and chattered..until they broke up.
My old service manager used to drive one and often complained of poor MPG but then he drove like a tw@t...lol
I'd go for the vRS IMHO if you want a slightly bigger car than a Leon. But overall id get a MY03 Cupra....love em.
Coil Packs and Lambda probe went on mine as well but it's never been off the road for more than a day - in fact 4 days total - 1 for coil packs, 1 for the Lambda probe (when they b*****d the SatNav, but fixed it as well) and 1 for each service so my experience backs up your comments pretty much .
I don't see the vRS or Cupra as competition for the V5. The V5 doesn't handle as well, especially on twisty bits and poor surfaces. It's a more relaxed cruiser though and better equipped. I enjoy driving it quickly without feeling the need to thrash the nuts off it.
BTW what's the best way of improving the ride on a V5? Replacement dampers?
I would have thought springs and dampers would hve been a good start.
Also the R32 front ARB fits the Leon so should fit the Toledo and its thicker than the Eibach upgraded ones.
Thanks, you might get a call in the New Year. Sorry to hijack the thread...
Well driving over the hills of Sheffield My MPG over the past month in a 170 V5 is below 20 !! I drive like a vicar honestly.Great car and its lucky I don't do to many miles or it would be history.

I get 25-28 around town/mixed driving and on a couple of occasions have got 40 on motorway bashes (once belting up the M6 at 80-90) cruise control is great!!

Sorry to disagree...:p But there's always one of us around...:duck:
Springs & dampers yes, but I won't upgrade the front bar...You need to increase (in this case add) a big rear bar so that the car won't understeer as much..
