OK, after been shocked to say the least at being quoted £500 for my 40K service (inc. cambelt etc) for my PD TDI Ibiza I was determined not to pay half a grand for a service...

..I, nor you have to. Due to the 'block exemption' laws that came into effect only a few months ago, you DO NOT HAVE TO GET YOUR CAR SERVICED AT A SEAT DEALERSHIP TO MAINTAIN WARRANTY.

Obviously the dealers are keeping this quiet (but my dealer just told me about it!), and SEAT UK only confirm this when ASKED DIRECTLY (2 weeks ago they skirted the issue, but I just asked directly and got a  ).

So basically here's the deal:

Get your car serviced whereever you want to avoid extortionate dealer prices.
Make sure that they use official VAG parts (cambelt etc) so as to maintain your cars warranty.
Finally, get them to stamp your book.

That's it, no more rip off servicing and labour costs.

Or have a fixed price service contract and not give a hoot about how much the dealer wants to charge :D

I'd get the cambelt done by a dealer though If I were you.

They may warranty the parts if genuine and used by someone else but they wont warranty the work done if its proven that it wasnt fitted correctly.

You have to be very carefull with this, my understanding of the rule is (and I have checked this with Seat). is that the first 2 years is a manufactors warranty and the final year is a dealer warranty, this basically means if you don't get it serviced at a seat main dealer then you lose that last year of your warranty.

The best thing you can do is give SEAT UK a call on that one.

I have a letter at home which I'll try and remember to bring it in tomorrow from a Dealer.

However, I believe this applies to the MANUFACTURES warranty only. The Dealer warranty, which comes into effect on UK supplied cars for the third year and limited to 60,000miles could be void by doing this.

Thats basically what Seat UK told me over the phone a few months ago when I purchased my car. Also my Bro works for a Audi Dealer and they say the they will not honor the Dealer warranty if it is not serviced at a main dealer.

Hehe.. make no diff to me as Sooty will be 2 yrs old in September next year, but by May I'll have done 60K and hence the dealer warranty will become 'void' anyway.

one of the reasons I bought a Import as it doesnt have the third year, only the two yr manufacures, which is unlimited mileage. Car now 2yrs 1 month old and on 60k

Had my Cambelt changed on my SDi Arosa, ( for sale, by the way - see SEATS for Sale ;) ), by a local garage, cost me £65 and no problems caused. So long as the mechanic doing the work is a competent one, of which there are plenty around, I wouldn't worry.

My understanding is that if it isn't fitted correctly the damage will be caused straight away - thus the garage doing the work will be responsible - unless they screw up something else like the belt routing or something, but don't see how they could do that.

I've only changed one cambelt myself, and that was on an old Vauxhall Astra - piece of cake, but very, very simple engine with loads of room to work around it.
