Christmas Day Blues

Hi guys, hope every one is having a good christmas.
i need some opinions;
on xmas day evening i was driving home from the good ol' xmas family gathering (about 100miles) and my car overheated. So i stopped and when idling it was fine, it seems its only over about 50mph it overheats (eg when there is a bigish load on the engine)
Does this sound like a classic case of water pump impeller to you, or somthing more serious?
any suggestions wanted/needed!

I'd probably check to see if it's not a stuck water temp sensor. This has happened twice to me.
