Been hunting around for the exact specs of my misses's Mk2 Ibiza and I can't find if it has remote central locking and an immobiliser fitted or not.
The reason I ask is because when we got the car it only had one key (which is not the remote blipper type), so I went to the local dealer to get another one cut. They said it was one of the transponder type keys, which would indicate to me that it has an immobiliser fitted. The remote central locking one is a wierd one because the key which came with the car looks a bit like the spare key for my Mk4.
Can anyone confirm the specs of the car or can I just go to the dealer and get ask?
The car is an Ibiza Mk2 1997 1.4 SXE.

Many thanks,
Andy and my misses (Nicky)
(Both driver Ibizas now :D )

My mk2, 1998, 1.4 sxe came with two keys. one has the blipper thing on, the other is just a plain key. not sure if this will help.

the spare key should have a transponder in it,inside the black part of the key, mine does(cordoba sx)take the key apart and take a look,do a google for thatcham, they will have a list.;)

if it has central locking fitted chances are its remote

you will need a Y shape key - coded and cut to match

and a remote blip to fit in it

takes 5 mins to code a remote to test and any ibiza remote will do it if anyone has an old spare (ask the used car guys :p )

Thanks for the responses.

I have had a look at the Thatcham site and it didn't really help muh as it only showed Ibiza's from May 99 as having a Cat 2 Immobiliser (think this is the Mk3).

Click here for pdf file (see page 26) (http://www.thatcham.org/resources/pdfs/compliance.pdf)

I have taken the key apart and it does have a transponder.

Looks like a trip to the dealer is called for unless anyone knows of somewhere heaper to get a blipper key from? ;)

Many thanks,
Andy and Nicky

Bringing an old thread back to life,
I have just got my mum a 1996 Ibiza 1.4, with an Immobiliser but we have only been given one key, It looks like a normal car key but I guess it has a gizmo in it to disarm the immobiliser when it is inserted into the ignition, anyway my mum called me the other day and said that our local SEAT stealer wants £100 for a key, funnily enough my mum told them to put it somewhere rather uncomfortable  .
What is her best option?
Is it possible to get a key cheaper?

Help!!!!!!

How??

easy way - remove the chip and stick it to the steering column but will proabbly render your insurance valid as anyone can start ya car then once the locks off

alternatively try your local locksmith - mine does cloned ones - solid style £24 all in

no coding required as the car simply thinks both keys are just one

Flapper can you tell me more about the cloned keys?

basically they have a reader/coder like a box with 2 holes in

for the older fixed code immobilisers the chip transmits a single code which is read by the reader and then burnt into a new chip in another key on the other side - as the technology is a bit older it takes all of 20 sec - they then cut the blade of the key to match and voila - you have 2 keys that work whereas the car just thinks it's the same one - worx pretty much on any pre 99 car with the single code type transponder chip

problem is as the same technology was adapted by thieves to steal your code from away from the car the manufacturers devised a more complicated/advanced version known as rolling code in which several codes are transmitted and recieved by the car and key at random making capture of the signal void as it will only grab the last one - clever huh :)

problem is it makes the keys more advanced and therefore more expensive and also requires better equipment to code them to the car etc hence you hear of 99 on cars needed £100 odd keys and the vehicle in the workshop to be *coded*

*tip*
as they are rolling codes always using one key can sometimes take any others out of cinque by removing it's identity from the code cycle (only so many numbers it can use) therefore its also a good idea to swap to your spare key every month or so to be sure and this will also enable 2 things

1-you know it fits the locks and it starts the car ok as it should

2- you will know where it is in case of needing it in a hurry

the amount of times i see used cars with 1 key or a customer who's stuck in tesco's cos their keys are lost/been stolen and can't find the spare are unreal and it never happens on a sunny day when you have all the time in the world does it ;)
