View Full Version : what is a wastegate??
Just been having a chat to a lad i know with an escort cossie and he was jabbering on about an aftermarket wastegate?? He also was saying that this is what gives the rally cars that chatter sound??
So what is a wastegate and if it does give that sound where can i get one!?:p
Cheers

I think it bypasses most of the exhuast gases before it hits the exhuast impeller of the turbo
the wastegate you know is fitted inside the turbo well the wastegate actuator(the one everyone winds up) senses boost pressure and opens it up if it is too much and blows out the zorst what you want/need is a group a actuator but i have yet to see one unless someone can tell me different the reason for this been the vag actuator runs 2 vacum one to open and one to close where the cossie.rs turbos only run 1 vac pipe if you do find one you will have A LOT OF FUN but will prbably melt down your cat and zorst packing as it allows you to run more boost and FLAMES start to appear due to it also incresing fuel
as our fpr is connected to ure inlet manifold and suck harder to allow morefuel

Oooo i like the sound of that! :D
.....but i like the sound of your RWD ibiza even more!!! From that spec it sounds like an absolute beast

The chattering sound, which sounds like a flock of very loud pigeons under your bonnet every time you lift off on a high boost turbo, is due to aerodynamic "stall" of the compressor wheel. This happens when you shut the throttle rapidly from a high boost condition, whereas with the thottle open you had 2.5 bar of boost and a lot of air flow, with it shut you still have 2.5 bar boost, but the air has nowhere to go, so the air that was flowing over the compressor wheel blades stalls, and rushed back out the inlet, causeing the chattering. then off course as the pressure after the compressor has droped, but the compressor wheel is still spinning very fast it tends to keep cycling and the noise continues, typically at the natural frequency of the primary induction system (2 to 4 hz)
Its a feature people put down to the GrpA actuator on cossies, but actually is really just a result of the high boost produced by this actuator.

My old Renault 11 turbo did this.. No DV and ran 18psi normally (22psi when feeling mad on a cold day)
Golfy also made this noise until I replaced the Bailey DV with my Forge 006P one. QED Bailey valve was sticking...
Serviced it and relubed it and it worked again. Maintenance free? I think not.
Sounds cool until you realise whats actually going on... Compressor stall. :eak:

yeah, no problem on a works rally car which every time you stop it, 15 people jump on it and change every moving bit for a new one!:p
I have had this chirp on my car occasionally (Like maybe 6 times in the past 2.5 years). Do you think I just need to clean the DV then?
Cheers
