I recently took delivery of a 53 reg Cupra T that was a dealer demo. Whilst reading through the handbook I noticed that it said Super Unleaded should be used but it was ok to put regular in from time to time if super was unavailable.(Is this due to differences in timing?)
I rang the dealer and asked them what they had been running it on and they said that it was ok to use regular all the time however the handbook says this may cause damage to the engine. Could any body tell me what they are running their cupra's on and what they have been told to use and if I am in danger of causing damage if I carry on using regular.Cheers J

its ok to run on 97 ron,the ecu will adjust itself according to the fuel you use.look on the inside of the fuel flap it'll say 97 -98 ron iirc(this is going by my cordoda)

My 16v says use fuel 95-97RON and my 20VT says use fuel 95-98RON.
Everyone seems to run their turbo with 99RON Optimax, however, unless you're running an optimax specific Revo code or similar, 95RON is fine to use. Higher RON fuels might get you a bit more throttle respose, ecomony and maybe even very slightly higher power, but I never noticed any difference.

I'd go with the 97 RON or above, the support for the 95 RON stuff is there to ensure that you can alwasy fuel it since 97+ isnt always available and to cover for mistakes so you don't det the engine. All the optimal builtin ECU settings and engine set up will be done for the higher fuel.

Retarding the timings for lower grade fuel is more of a fail safe function of the ECU then intended operation of the car. Obviously this becomes more of an issue the higher the engine is tuned, having to run a 225 LCR on 95 RON would be a worse thing than running a 180bhp Cupra on it for example. But rest assured either way your very very unlikely to actually blow the engine with a std map and 95 RON.

Its not the same engine (but similar enough to be relevant) but my scoob is rated the same. I'm supposed to run it on 97RON or above but can run it on 95 RON "when fuel of a higher grade is unavailable". When I have had to run it off 95 ron in emergencies it certainly felt more sluggish and lost some of its smoothness at low revs and at the idle.

Oh and I'd take special care to avoid supermarket fuel as it has a very poor reputation amongst performance car owners regarding performance and safety/reliability of the engine.
