View Full Version : New high performance fuel from shell
Has anyone else seen the advertising for the new high performance unleaded fuel shell will be bringing in in the next couple of weeks?
Apparently it has a different base product formulation and a performance additive as well which they claim will be the most powerful fuel you can put in your car!!
It seems to be targeted at super unleaded users (which i am !) and i bet it will carry a price premium but i am certainly gonna try it when it comes out and will probably swich to using it all the time as i get more power and mpg with super unleaded over ordinary unleaded !
------------------
Saw this fuel last weekend at Keele ervices on the M6, price was 6p a litre over normal unleaded which was bloody expensive with it being a Motorway services and all that ...
The leaflet reckoned it uses 'Formula 1 technology' ie something in common with the fuel they produce for Ferrari F1 (mmmm... it combusts maybe ??)
Sombasically same price as super unleaded from what I could tell ...
Well i just got myself a tankfull of optimax and Holy cow !!! http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/eek.gif this stuff is seriously potent,
My bridgestone potenza s-03 pp tyres in 225/50r16 stopped me wheelspinning in second gear because of the traction i can get with them, but with optimax in my tank there is wheelspin a plenty in second now!!,
Just as i thought i was gonna get a decent mileage on these tyres !!! http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/wink.gif

Optimax is shells new high octane, high performance fuel for cars that run on unleaded at the moment,
They will be slowly phasing out super unleaded over the next year and replacing it with this rocket fuel!! http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/wink.gif
They guarantee it to be a minimum of 99Ron (octane) and to be more like 101 octane most of the time,
I was in london on friday and found on the shell website that they were selling in in dullwich in london, so took myself a detour with an empty fueltank on my way home to get some of it and i'm hooked !!
I live in bracknell and baldocks shell in bracknell are getting it on the 12 september, so i will be running it full time from then on!!, It made my engine a bit noisier under acceleration and on idle my car misses a beat every few seconds but it makes a serious difference to performance!!
------------------
Tried it, first impressions are it was worse than Super unleaded. Seemed to get poor performance using it, although I did mix it with a half tank of Esso Super. Tried it again yesterday on an empty tank and seemed to be doing alot better.

would it be worth filling up an near empty tank with optimax, then disconnecting the battery for an hour....
If the Leon has a 'learning' ECU, then resseting it could be a better way of it adapting it to the new few ???
My battery was disconnected for about half a day on tuesday as i was fiddling about under the bonnet trying to get at my spark plugs to see what sort of condition they were in,
But they are soo deep inside the head that i didnt have a long enough socket extension to get at it,
So my ECU was reset then i would guess as i lost my trip miles and had to reset the clock

And since it's made just up the road it looks like all the Liverpool shell stations are going to stock it... http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/biggrin.gif

It won't be 101 RON; 90% of all refinery mogas ex. the refinery is only made at 101 RON, so you have to blend some poorer quality gasoline components into the blend, which reduces the RON. Further, you only blend to specification; blending beyond that means you're into giving octane away for free, which means you go into giveaway, which means you lose money...not something refiners are partial to doing...!

Your probably right about the octane rating, but they dont actually quote an octane for it, they just say better than 98, I suppose it's anyones guess what it is, If anyone does find out or maybe even test it it would be interesting to know as it gives more power than the french super unleaded and that is 98 RON

Folks
If any of you lot who are lucky enough to be able to get some OptiMax, write down and tell me the BS number, and i'll check out the minimum specification for it, as i've access to the specs.
Cheers.

The shell website...
Shell UK (http://www.shell.com/uk-en/directory/0,4010,44845,00.html)
just says "greater than 98RON" so you're probably looking at 98.1 most of the time http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/wink.gif
Cheers
