Can any of you boys tell me what to check to see why car is overheating. On running the car goes to the normal temp but when sat stationary for any longer than 20 minutes the temp needle starts to rise, then once moving the car cools. It has only just started to do this the since saturday. Not had this problem before.
Any help would be great.
Cheers
Rob
check the fuses on top of the battery, one of which has a prone failure (water ingress i think) its for the water pump for the turbo.

Leave the car idling after you have driven it to warm it up, lift the bonnet and wait. After some time (and it could be a few mins if it's cold outside, or you have the cabin heater on) the electric fan mounted on the radiator should start, it has 2 stages. The first low speed / quiet one is difficult to hear without the bonnet up. It should come on slow at about 98 to 100 deg coolant temp, but if this first slow stage fails to cool the car, at 102 deg it will switch into full power mode, this you will deffinately hear.
The idea of this is too cool the car under normal conditions without too much noise, but if you want to tow a trailer up a mountain in 2nd gear, the bigger fan stage will be powerful enough to stop you car overheating.
I have seen the low power stage fail, and hence the fan kicks in late at 102 degC but this is a bit late and looks worrying to the driver.

The 40 amp fuse (on top of the battery) in mine went and it overheated, it stoppped the fans coming on.
The fans on mine come on just about all the time when stationary, in colder weather like now it takes longer maybe 30-60 seconds for them to come on, in the summer it was within 2-3 seconds.
Dealer says nothing is wrong ?

I have checked all the fuses on top of the battery, but they all seem to ok, is there anything else I can look at??

I went to a trackday at Donnington, and after a session and a warmdown lap I pulled into the pits and left the engine running. After a few minutes I got back in the car to do another run. I immeadiately noticed that the temp was at max and the red temp warning was flashing... SH1T! Stopped the engine and popped the bonnet... at this point i noticed that the water level in the reservour was rising slowly (Must of been boiling somewhere!) and so we only had seconds to sort it before something would go bang.
I noticed the fans weren't running, so grabbed the manual and found where the fan fuse lives. Popped out the fan fuse and put the ABS fuse in its place... the fans kicked in in typhoon mode! The fans are pretty impressive and brought the temp down in about 30 seconds (I restarted the engine to get the hot water to circulate)!
Anyway, getting back to the point... when I looked at the fan fuse I had removed I noticed that the contacts were slightly corroded and that the fuse had actually started to melt (Looked like there had been some arcing).
So have you tried getting your fan to kick in? If so and it doesn't then take it to the dealer and tell them that you want them to demonstrate that the fan is working by leaving the engine to heat up.
Cheers
Ben
