View Full Version : Changing Sidelights Bulbs **GUIDE**
Right I know when I did this Char asked for a guide so I thought it was about time I got my bum in gear and got it done!
Tools/Parts needed :
Sidelight bulbs x4 (I have a sport model that needs 4)
Hands
Tissue or toilet paper
Cup of tea ;-)
Car used :
10 Plate Ibiza 1.4 SC Sport
Time needed :
About 10 minutes for a first timer
Difficulty :
2/5 - Only because it can be a bit fiddly!
When you first start the sidelights will look like this :
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/Biza/sidelight1.jpg
Nice huh, how cool is the standard look (YUCK!), time to change things!
I'll be using these :
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/18.jpg
Step 1 :
Open the bonnet, ok most people know how but it could be the first time you've done it! The bonnet pull is on the passenger side footwell, the bonnet catch is marginally off centre when you ease the bonnet up a touch.
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/1.jpg
I'm just going to show you the drivers side, the passenger side is exactly the same. You'll be greated with the below.
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/2.jpg
First thing you'll need to do it unclick the bulb covers, these are easy to do, just pull up on the clips. There are 2 covers, first one.
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/3.jpg
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/4.jpg
And the second one
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/5.jpg
Lets put these out of harms way!
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/6.jpg
You now need to find the side light bulb holder, it is a bit fiddly, it's the highest holder in the cluster of three.
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/7.jpg
This is the sidelight holder for the sidelight bulb nearest the wing
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/8.jpg
Another fiddly part. you will need to put you fingers around the holder for the sidelight, pinch one side, pull and wiggle (the holder not yourself!). This should free the holder so you can just pull it out
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/9.jpg
If done correctly you should be greeted by this (note mine are already the aftermarket bulbs as they are already in my car!).
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/10.jpg
You will now need to grab your tissue or toilet paper (Classy), put it over the bulb and pull it out. We put the tissue over the bulb so it doesn't wreck it. Once out place the old bulb somewhere safe as you may need it one day. Grab a new bulb from the pack (with tissue remember!) and just push back into the holder. MAKE SURE AFTER YOU HAVE PUT THE NEW BULB IN THAT YOU TEST IT WORKS, IF IT DOESN'T TAKE THE BULB OUT AND TURN IT 180 DEGREES AND RE INSERT AS IT WILL HAVE BEEN IN THE WRONG WAY ROUND.
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/11.jpg
Now all you need to do is push the holder back into place and hey presto "We're Halfway There!!"
Next you need to take out the holder nearest the grille
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/12.jpg
This one is a bit more simple, you can just pull this one out, you should be greeted with.
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/13.jpg
Repeat the step where you take out the bulb and put it back in as above. You will then need to just push this holder back into place.
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/14.jpg
Grab those pesky covers again, line up the inserts at the bottom and push the clips down to secure them
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/15.jpg
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/16.jpg
Once all put back together, turn on your sidelights and you should have something like this
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/17.jpg
Stand back for a moment, pat yourself on the back and admire your handy work!
Great guide, will have to do this to mine when it arrives. What's the part number for the LEDs?
Thanks mate, they are 501 bulbs.
These are the ones I used (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_183355_langId_-1_categoryId_165604)

Thank you for that guide! :))
Do these bulbs bring up an error message on the dash?
And are they bright?

Error message is bought up by these.

Will try and get a better one at night
fitted mine today and $%?! me what a arse on it was! getting your hand in and trying to get hold of them took me a good half hour! looks great tho and compliments the HID's i fitted. shame the numberplate lights didnt fit :( have to send them back!
Lol next time it will take no time at all

What was it like to fit your HID bulbs?
Had them in the dip beam of my 06 Passat, it was a right basket to fit the bulbs into the reflectors as the access hole was small and the screen wash bottle in the way.
Dip beam was great with them!
I propose to fit the H7 units from the Passat into the main beam and buy a new kit for the dip beam for my Ibiza which I hope to collect later this week.
Is there anyway to reset that error message yourself? I fitted canbus led's. But when i tried them i had one put in wrong. So that didnt work, changed it and all is fine. But the dashboard registered one of the lamps didnt work...so now its giving the error.
Do i have to go to the dealer to reset that? or is there some "check again"/ reset option?

I'd take a guess you could reset yourself with Vagcom but not too sure if it will flash back up.
Does the warning light bother you that much? I don't like having mine on but I will put up with it for the lights as I know it will be off when I put the standards back in
I can't find the post, but i'm sure techie has posted how to do it somewhere.
I can't find the post, but i'm sure techie has posted how to do it somewhere.
Ill try to find it. thanks
@SC16v, well its not the end of the world. But the car is one week old, and having this yellow "warning" light thingie, just annoys me a little. :)
I know what you mean mate, I thought the same but having the lights means more to me :p
Resistors should solve the warning light problems :)
I've just fitted canbus LEDs and the warning light has poped up. I'm gunna the dealership on Wednesday should they be able to fix it?
All these tales of the bulb warning light coming on when you fit led sidelights. Does the bulb failure light go off again if you re fit the standard bulb?
I had HID's in the dipped beam of my 06 Passat, every now & then when I switched to main beam, one of the dipped beams would flicker then go off always the off side light. The bulb failure light would come on. When I switched off the lights for a few seconds all was restored, both headlights working and no failure light:D..........until the next time the offside light flickered[:@]
Just fitted the kit I had in my Passat into the main beam of the Ibiza and upto now no problems. I intend to buy a new canbus compatible H7R hid kit to fit into the dipped beams.

Once the standard bulbs are refitted the warning light does not appear :)

I take it your LEDs are the flat circuit board type - could you post some photos of each side of the board, please?
Just fitted 2 of these, one in each side just to try them.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-X-25-SMD-LED-White-Car-Wedge-Light-Bulb-T10-W5W-NEW-/130431881129?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e5e588fa9#ht_4228wt_1090
A nice white light and no warning light lit!!!
I think I may try to adapt the inner side light bulbs as DRL's if they are bright enough from a distance. As I have just finished fitting them, I have not been out onto the road, so have yet to find out if they will be bright enough for DRLs

Ye sure I'll do it in the morning going to try and sort the warning light out
UPDATE :
Right guys after having the sidelight bulbs in for 2 months I've started to get tired of having the bulb warning light on CONSTANTLY when I put the lights on, something had to be done!
With a few peoples help I found out that the L.E.D bulbs were causing problems with the system and I would either have to stump up £9.99 per bulb for one that would cure the problem or install resistors. I couldn't afford to pay that kind of money for a sidelight bulb and I didn't want to install resistors.
I had a look on the net for an alternative and was getting fed up when I found these :
Clicky Clicky - Link To Bulbs (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180571015834&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_2062wt_1139)
CAN-BUS 501 No error bulbs (if you can call them bulbs, bit weird looking eh!!).
I asked the seller if they would work OK and he confirmed they should, I took a bit of a punt, £8 for x2 wouldn't be too bad a loss if they didn't work. They came through today :
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/new_1.jpg
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/new_2.jpg
Was going to wait until I got home to fit them but as per usual I just couldn't wait so on my lunch I installed them.
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/new_4.jpg
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/new_3.jpg
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/new_5.jpg
As I still had x2 of the Prism bulbs in the warning light was still on, I was going to have to wait to fit 2 of the original sidelight bulbs after work! Got home around 6pm and rushed to find my old bulbs, I quickly swapped the Prism bulbs over and went to turn the lights on................
First go with new sidelight bulbs (http://s784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/?action=view¤t=IMG_0277.mp4)
RESULT!!!! New bulbs work a treat, I only have x2 of them in so waiting for another pack to confirm x4 work together but I'm 99.9% sure they will (confirmation next week hopefully!).

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/new_7.jpg
Thought I'd update this as I know a few people will want to change their sidelights and will want some that don't bring up the dashboard error light. Have to also recommend the seller, he was helpful when I asked a question and got the bulbs in next to no time! Hope this helps guys
Did you fit them upwards or side to side I didn't no which way to put mine in when I fitted mine
Moved them so they are side to side, seemed to reflect more
Very nice mate!!!! Those a re the same as Daves are they not?
I believe they are just about the same, can't see many differences apart from the price
OK well the warning light is back on :( but will be trying to get this fixed ASAP!

UPDATE :
Yet another attempt at this  bought these from ebay for £3.00 inc postage :
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/19.jpg
Auction didn't mention LED but got them and the packet says LED, uh oh! Still no point not giving them a go in the car, the bulbs are blue but they shine white.
Installed them in the outside x2 sidelights :
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/20.jpg
All working with the old x2 inner standard sidelight bulbs in with no warning light :
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/21.jpg
I then decided to try my CANBUS LED bulbs in the inner sidelights :
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/22.jpg
Now for the big moment, I switched on the car and the lights....... :
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/23.jpg
......SUCCESS! The new bulbs and the CANBUS LEDs are both working and no warning lights :funk:
They look like this is a lit underground carpark :
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/24.jpg
They look a tad blue in photos but they are pretty white in real life, I'm going to wait until it gets dark to get some better pictures

So it's CANBUS inner lights and any you want on the outside?
Look good with the slight blue hint to them, don't think plod would agree though
I think they look bluer because of the camera, they shine white and are "supposed" to be E-Marked and road legal.
Don't use them much just need them white to match the headlight bulbs I'll be getting :) if they do give off much of a blue tint tonight I'll probably hunt for some more lol

Used them tonight and......they are a bit too blue :( dammit!!

Aw no. There must be someone who has found no errors for the mk5.
Ordered some more bulbs, blue also and shine white but made by Ultra, see if these work!
UPDATE :
Right, hopefully this will be the last time I have to update this one! got these bulbs through the post this morning :
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/25.jpg
They are Ultra 501 sidelight bulbs (£4.00 from Ebay), they are also blue in colour but shine white.
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/26.jpg
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/27.jpg
I changed the ones I bought the other day for these and went to turn them on. I was a little worried because of what happened with the last blue bulbs, didn't want to keep wasting money. I turned them on and the dash warning light DID NOT appear, I looked over at the lights and saw :
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/28.jpg
They looked A LOT whiter than the last set and I was happy, I turned them off, put all the parts back and set out for the multistory car park. They looked liked this in there :
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/29.jpg
**Note this was taken with my iPhone 4 and had the HDR feature working which makes both lights look blue**
I'm happy to report what I've seen so far that they look lovely and white :funk: I will get some pictures when it gets a bit darker.
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy127/SC16v/sidelights/30.jpg

OK guys, here they are, the night time pics, I love it !

No warning light at all :)
Using the Ultra bulbs on the outside and the CANBUS LED bulbs inside

Glad the tip about CANBUS on just the inside sidelights helped.
You just need a red led strip across the front of the bonnet now...Knight Rider stylee! How cool would that be?!
God how I wanted a car like Kitt from Knight Rider when I was younger! A turbo boost button! Wow! Lol!
Yeah was a good tip mate :)
LOL I remember the old knight rider lights, an old mate of mine had one on his Modified Orion about 10 years ago!
Would like DRLs but think they would look out of place

I would say just concentrate now on finding some headlight bulbs that match and stop there. The money spent on bulbs could go on another mod...trust me...spent a fortune on my old Ibiza trying get sidelights/headlights right. Try not to sacrifice performance too much for the sake of styling. In my experience, the whiter/blue the bulb, the crapper the visability. Why I went in the end for the Philips Power2night GT150 bulbs. Good balance of performance and styling (blue tip to create subtle blue tint in reflection of headlight).
I'm going to see if I can find any but not overly bothered if I can as the lights don't look too bad for the time being

ta very much for this guide SC16v and all the info on what lights to use ive put in the side light bulbs you recommended and they look great and no warning lights. ive also used osram night breaker plus headlights for dipped beam only (just now) and led license plate bulbs. Much happier with the look of the car now with crisp white lights not the old gritty yellow look :)

Got a set of bulbs for christmas, just fitted them with great ease thanks to your guide sc16v (and cheers for the links)
just a note for the 1.6tdi drivers, the drivers side outer one is a tight fit thanks to something or other in the engine bay but can be done without removing the whole unit. (though tbh, if i had a set of torx keys i'd probably do that)
so @sc16v could you tell me again what bulbs you finally used cause i got a bit lost with all those bulbs. also are your final bulbs LED? i see that one of the bulbs has a blue tinted glass. has anyone bought a bulb that hadn't blue glass? i dont like it when the lights are off but i might try it. also i have xenon lights for the dipped beam. will these bulbs much the xenon? and i also want to change the high beam bulbs so that it will much the xenon. any recommendations? oh. and also i found this while surfing. www.dectane.de/product_info.php?info=p56608_d-lite-headlights-seat-ibiza-6j-daytime-running-light-r87.html&XTCsid=19af337e48b1f4e7692920b345de257b
itt looks good. has anyone heard/used something like it?

I have changed all bulbs (dipped, full, fogs and sidelights x 4) to ULTRA bulbs. Reasonably priced, good visability, E marked/road legal and they are WHITE, not yellowy-white like many others. Plus none are LED, so no fannying about with flickering/warning lights or sidelights dropping out in headlight (had bumper off 3 times!). My car is blue, so really like the blue sidelights when off. Really pleased with them after many wasted purchases!
Could you please tell me what bulbs you used for fogs and high beam?? Maybe give me an eBay link?
anthedge
13-02-2011, 20:38
Fogs are HB4, full beam are H7. Do a search on eBay for 'ultra HB4' or 'ultra H7' . Lots of sellers do them.
fogs and full beam have the bluetinted glass too? do you think they will look good on a white fr?
Same as Anthedge, all ULTRA bulbs now, blue bulbs is a bit of a shame but rather have blue bulbs that shine White than clear that shine yellow. Should look good on the FR. I'd love some Dectane DRL lights but I've spoken with that company and they said they are strictly LHD only and are not thinking of bringing out a RHD version :(

Sorry mate do you mean the actual bulbs or are the sidelights on the car from factory?
All cars have sidelights, the bulbs are aftermarket ones

You're a God, SC. :worship:
Just to confirm, though... you have both the ULTRA bulbs in the outer and inner sidelights, right? Or do you have to have the CANBUS LED's as the inner and ULTRA as the outer to avoid the dash warnings etc?
EDIT: Scratch that, I've just realised your other thread further down confirming which bulbs you have. My first comment still stands, though!
Great guide mate  I got the canbus led sidelights but haven't got them fitted yet. Glad I found this guide actually. Would love to know how using the led bulbs on the inside 2 bulbs and the Ultra bulbs on the outside 2 makes the error light stay off though?? Weird!
Anyway I've just purchsed a pair of the Ultra 501's so they'll match the rest of my Ultra headlights  Just the fogs to be changed next
Did you have any difficulties getting the sidelights out first time round? I managed to snap one of the wee lugs on the plastic holder that holds them in :( hence why I came on here to check

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I can't post new threads at the moment.
Is there any mods you do to the lights to have DRL's on the front and rear lights like the Cupra/Boc except for fitting Bi-xenons ?
Also, I've noticed on some people's rides their front DRL's are where the indicators are whereas on others they are just next to the full beam. Is this some kind of mod?
Any help would be appreciated, cheers!
char_baby
19-04-2011, 09:00
The bocs DRLs are at the side, same for the cupras. Haven't seen any next to the full beam bulb.
nightflight
19-04-2011, 09:14
the ones with DRL's are the car's equipped with bi-xenon headlights, which have them where the indicators are.
all the other headlight units have standard sidelights only which are above the main and dipped lamps.
Cheers guys, I had a feeling that was the case.
If you don't mind me asking, do some people change the sidelights to LED's so they can have them on in the day to look like DRL's? or is it just the small case of changing them so they look better in dusk :p
Sorry I'm a newbie to all this stuff, but when I pick up my car on Tuesday I think I may just indulge in the world of car mods ;)

23-04-2011, 08:23
Don't worry i was a complete noob into the modding world!
Most people change them for the look at dusk. Don't like going around during the day with sidelights on, unless i had DRLs.

Headlamp bulbs were pretty painless too!

If you have a normal ibiza sc you just need to take the front gills off I think. No need to drop the bumper :)
I'm looking at going my fog soon, decided to get the cornering lights turned off as they are annoying lol

Has anyone changed the side lights in the xenon lights?
Haven't seen a guide on here or anyone who's done it.

Had a run of 'error free' led bulbs that kept throwing up a fault with 2010 cupra, in the end I bought some of these -
2x LED 5W SIDE LIGHT LOAD RESISTOR NO ERROR 501 W5W T10
Everything now works perfectly.

Here is the link
Bulbs (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-T10-W5W-194-927-161-501-Car-Canbus-8-SMD-LED-Side-Wedge-Light-Bulb-White-12V-/300674214309)
Now i know he has em priced at £50.99 for a pair, but i suspect he has no stock but wants to keep his listing alive etc....
I got 4 of these for under £4 inc postage. As of today there is still no errors and work fine. If it were to throw up errors would they have come up right away or can they appear over time ?

Well TBH i just gently pulled them by the wires. Not ideal but worked.
Take your pick (http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l2736&_nkw=Canbus+8+SMD+LED) Just to say double check the item first, i just did a search for 'Canbus 8 SMD LED'
