If the car is normally aspirated petrol, a 40k mile service is basically the same as a 20k mile service with the addition of spark plugs and air filter. Not sure about forced induction motors or diesels. General rule with (petrol) VAG engines is cambelt at the 60k mile service.

things that are changed...
gearbox oil
Are you sure about that? It's the first time i've ever heard of gearbox oil being a service item on any VW 'box. BTW, brake fluid is every 2 years, regardless of mileage.

Regarding price, I think mine came in at about £200 all up. The same dealer (after a major change of personnel) subsequently quoted me in excess of £400 for the 50k service (oil change + inspection) and change the cam belt. A different dealer eventually did the same work for a shade over £200. Go figure...

Apologies Goble, it was not my intention to offend.

I don't recall seeing a gearbox oil change mentioned in the manufacturers service schedule of any of the VAG cars i've ever owned. Nor do I recall ever having been charged for gearbox oil.

Brake fluid - just stating what the service schedule states. A brake fluid change is not necessarily a 40k mile service item, the official VAG line on this is that it should be replaced every 2 years.

Do I take it that my Leon TDi 110 is classed an old diesel motor, as its not a PD?

on the ibiza 1.8 20vt drain bung is easy to get to but filler bung is a pain to get to as intercooler gets in the way and has to be removed to do so just another 10 min work
the whole 40 k service should take no longer than 2 1/2 hours if nothing out of the ordinary is reqd
n.b. tell them to have a good look ar the servo hose they have got a nasty habbit of splitting
