Race & Track Cars magazine featured 2 mkiv golfs this month

One TDi with about 220bhp & another 1.8T with a k04.

Superchips dyno these cars to obtain a benchmark figure based on power for a PWR calculation.

somehow I think they cocked up.

the 1.8T with a K04 ran 212bhp... with 285lb/ft of torque.. the torque was the owners estimate.

the magazine commented on how their timing gear suggested it had much more power than that.

bearing in mind how the engine was described as 'race spec' I found it amusing to see that it was underperforming from standard.

or maybe superchips ran the cars really badly.

the tdi racer had about 384lb/ft of torque. god knows how - but it's a conversion that allard turbosports sell. maybe it comes with a "gearbox per month" allowance.

The cup cars run on a power:weight limit - thus, its in their interest to provide data from RR's that is perhaps conservative to what may be produced on race day....with better cooling.....etc. Of course the RR day figs are perfectly truthful for what happened at that time.

Torque dont enter into the regs at all....60 million ftlb so long as no more than X bhp/tonne....thats why turbo's and 8V's are so good - only X bhp/tonne but with a flat power curve from 1.5-7K - 16V's have no chance.

Its a fiddle - but thats racing for ya....push the regs as far as you can get away with

just thinking that an unscrupulous team could make the intercooler less efficient for the RR test - by just blocking the air flow a bit, then major heatsoak sets in & you run low ballast.

like you say - regs & bending & making the best of them

may as well all run light cars with 20VT's & call it the 20VT cup.... as no other engine will be so inaccurate on a RR if run up badly.

Not sure how the new regs have altered, but a certain 1.8T Lupo would no longer be eligable.... Handy it was trashed at the last round and could'nt defend its (not to be) championship.... I suspect the regs have taken the opportunity to alter things somewhat.
Smaller/lighter/less powerful, may not be as competetive this year....

Diesels tho...?

Be interesting to see

Of course, if the engine produced 60 million ftlb throughout the rev range, to be elligible it would need to be either:
a) installed in something VERY heavy
OR
b) unbelievably low revving

It's a drop in torque as the revs rise that make 8v's and turbo's so effective in this championship. I suppose ideally you'd want torque to tail off at a rate of 1/5252 ftlb per RPM a perfectly flat power curve?

Probably got a similar kerb (dry dock?) weight as a mk5 Golf!

So if I put this detuned Toereg V10 diesel into the front of this Golf?;)
