View Full Version : Exhaust - Which one?
OK, the original equipment exhaust has finally started to give up after 65,000 miles and 6 years so I need to replace it. Looking at getting a stainless steel cat back system, and I'd appreciate comments on who has what on their Mk2.
I don't want anything too loud, I need to be able to drive at motorway speeds for hours at a time without being deafened by the exhaust! Obviously I want it with a little more bass and a sporty note, but not like a Nova SR with a Peco! :D
I know there are probably loads of old threads about exhausts but I figured this new request is probably quicker than searching the depths!
All suggestions/recommendations are welcomed.
Cheers,
Adam
P.S. Anybody have a Long Life custom fit exhaust on their car?
On my old 8v i had a powerflow one , this was loud but sounded very nice , got sick of it really but the exhaust died a death , rusted a lot , was clunking after 6 months or so. Cat back cost me £250
At the mo on my 16v i have a Magnex 6 x 4 oval backbox , makes a nice burble on idle and acceleration , at 70 - 80 the sound isnt too intrusive at all, actually very quiet. it looks the dogs danglies too :) Cost me £175 .

Cheers Brett.
One brownie point for Magnex then.
Anyone else have any recommendations?
You could always go for the budget option and fit a second hand mk3 20VT cat back system. There's always quite a few almost new ones in the for sale section. It'll fit straight on, you just need to make a small cut out on the bottom of the bumper.
I have a Remus back box which looks nice but certainly isn't too loud, in fact you can bearly hear it. It does pop and burble sometimes though which is nice. I'm not sure if they still make it though as I had difficulty trying to get hold of a centre pipe.
The Magnex is a bit too big and over the top for my tastes, but it doesn't sound as loud as it looks, and is quite acceptable at motorway speeds.
What are you trying to say !!!! .... my exhaust is too over the top and flamboyant !!!... WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA..... Right then , i have had ENOUGH !!!!! :D :D
Only joking ..
Yup the magnex it too ott, doesnt like lowered suspension & vibrates on the rear beam, fouls my Eibach rear ARB & splits the exhuast mount rubbers and resonates too much.
Why did I buy it? wanted a stainless exhuast back box that wasnt twin exit and was readily available hwen the oe one dropped off.

I got a full cat back Magnex (Oval) system fitted to my 16v cupra sport and the bloody thing rattled the car like crazy. It sounds mint but i had to get the back bumper cut at the bottom. Rattle solved and an increase in performance with a great sound. Not bad for £300.

Lol, mines melted the bumper!
Didnt have to cut my bumper . Fits like a glove , first day i got it though and had it fitted , got home from a tanning of the car , badge wasnt there... i touch the exhaust ...FFFFFF***CCCKKKK... ! damn it was hot , it hasnt melted the bumper either... (goes and checks) :D
Well, I had to get one fitted sooner than expected. Driving to Wales to visit the family Friday night and the blowing got worse and worse until it gave up. The pipe into the rear silencer had rusted away completely and disconnected itself! Sounded like a WRC crossed with a Sherman tank.
Anyhow, I managed to get the car booked in with Longlife in Cardiff. They custom fit exhausts to your car. Picked a 5x3" oval tailpipe (from a selection of about 30!) and the rear valance was cut perfectly. Dropped the car off at 11am, was given a courtesy car for the day and picked the car up at 5pm. It still needs a little fine tuning (it's too loud on the motorway and there's the occasional knock), but they have said bring it back and it'll all be sorted until it's perfect. However, despite the teething troubles, it looks great, the customer service was excellent and it's made the car slighty quicker too. Sweeeeeet!
Click below for the website, they have locations near London, Sheffield, Bristol and Birmingham in addition to Cardiff.

And I'm not on commission either! :D
