I've been wanting to do something to my 16v engine for a while as i think its lacking a bit of power. I've upgraded my exhaust and added an induction kit allowing the car to breath that bit easier and now i want to add to this. Ive been advised on upgrading cams etc but does this really work or am i wasting my money. Has anybody modified their 16v and had great / bad results? am i wasting my money or will it be worth it? cheers.

quite a few peeps have had it done, AMD done it i think, and they do cams/port/polish and chip and see around 170-180bhp and alot better revving motor, think tony2quick4you done it to his before he sold it, pm him and ask

tony's was an 8v, but yes, work can be done and improvements are there its just a case of money really, 300 ish for chip, p&p'd head varies and cams can cost quite a few hundred depending if you go for new or 2nd hand. Go on , do it, you know you want to!!:D :D
Im in the middle of the same process, ive had the head flowed and skimmed, im not going to bother with cams tho as i dont want the car to be dead below 4k, i have to use mine as a daily runner so it needs to be fairly easy to drive in traffic.

I thought that if you uprgrade the cams it would improve the overall performance of the car. Would it make the car minging in the lower revs?

Really depends on what spec cams you use, how well done the remap is if you get one done.

performance cams close the inlet valves later meaning that more air can get in when the engine is turning fast (as the air has momentum). but it can have an adverse effect when the engine is turning slower

Yup the car will be crap at low rpm's if you make the mistake of having a cam thats too wild for road use. Schrick 268's of kent 264's are about as wild as you should go. I have shrick 260's in mine and they work nicely for normal driving as well as when u wanna give it some.

You won't get much change from £700 cus the cams cost £500. Its worth paying the extra and taking your car to a garage that has a good reputation cus you will have to pay even more if a poor job is done and it all has to come out again. Also as mentioned before on this thread, there is not much point getting cams if your not gunna get the head flowed as well. Basically N/A tuning is very expensive.

Dunno if the Beezer will respond as good as my Golf 16v but a set of 45's gave me 165bhp out of a 1.8 with the only other mod bein a exhaust.
Fuel economy did suffer a bit......OK a lot!!!!!!!

When you said N/A tuning did you mean dont bother as it costs too much for what you get? i'll have to get it done anyway! im a power freak!!!

N/A = Normally Aspirated

Engine is suplied its air through a non-force induced method such as a turbo or supercharger.

NA Tuning is more expensive as its not just a case o tweeking the boost and fuel (i know very simplistic explanation)
