At what point is it necessary to change both pistons and rods on an AYP engine 1.8T 20V (Ibiza Cupra R).

Could I just get away with changing rods??

Hi there,

We normally recommend changing rods around 300-330 tq.

Stock pistons are generally save up to about 400bhp if you are seeking reliability. If you want to surpass the 400bhp mark we would recommend picking up an aftermarket set of pistons (JE, Wiseco, Mahle Etc).

In other words, it depends on how aggressive your set up is...

Cheers,

Dave

Thanks a lot Dave - how much are we looking at for a kit then rods, bearings etc, and what about bolts?

Hi there,

We offer OEM rod bearings for $32.99 or Calico coated bearings for $79.99. The rod bolts are included with the rods.

Thanks,

Dave

Spend slightly more and get the calico coated bearings...Might as well also change piston rings :)

Yup, the extra money is worth it for a better bearing. It's also not much in the grand scheme of your project.

Dave - what would you say the rods are capable of. They're fitted in my car now just wanted to know out of curiousity.

Cheers

If you change the piston rings then you will have to hone the bore as well, hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs.

All honed, new JE pistons with new rings all gapped up :) no eggs being sucked ;)

If you looking at over 500bhp, maybe get tooled steel wrist pins and the upgraded ARP rod bolts...

That's all good then! I have ARP 2000's holding them together at the mo! Wrist pins canme with pistons so I imagine they're more than capable too. Just didn't want to be playing with limits...

We have tested our H-beams and seen them in cars powered over 700HP ;)

Do you want them on this thread yeah?

Please! We love to see our parts in build threads.
