I enquired about this many moons ago. Conclusions - very expensive. Can be done elsewhere cheaper. That's not to say this isn't a good conversion and that the workmanship you'd expect to be top quality.

Where else can you get it done?
And at what price?

This was from AmD 12 months + ago:

We can also offer what is known as the AmD stage 2 conversion. This includes a gasflowed head with re-profiled valve seats & inlet/exhaust manifolds and all the work to remove and refit the head (inc new spark plugs etc) and full setting up on the rolling road with the ECU re-mapped to suit. Typical power figures achieved should be in the 180bhp area. Cost £1600+vat

As for headwork any decent/reputable outfit could do the same work eg Stealth, Autotechnik, TSR, one of the numerous so-called cylinderhead specialists etc. Finish off with a remap at Stealth or even go aftermarket ECU/piggyback chip like Unichip.

Also:

The AmD PC16V3 conversion is a full Big valve head and Schrick cam set up, producing @185-190bhp. Cost for this conversion is £1900 + VAT, workshop time @1 week.

If you break this down, IMO it adds up to be quite expensive, not hugely, but if cost is a factor for you then it might make a difference.

180bhp for all that work doesnt seem that much. I had my 16v chipped at amd with only a back box and panel filter fitted. My car now has 175bhp and 151 lb ft.

They're erring on the side of caution. If you look at their website they quote minimal gains for a remap, and if you add on their 'quoted' gains to a base 150 then you don't hit 175.

Weve now stopped doing the older VAG cars to concentrate on the more modern range. This is by no means a slur on your car, I wanted a 16v for a second car myself for sometime and they are excellent engines. We do very few MK2 golfs now, mainly limiting ourselves to MK3 VR6's as we still have alot of tuning parts for them and there is a select market for them.

Times change and things move on thats all. We often refer any such work onto Stealth racing as we have dealt with Vince and the chaps many times and know their standard of work to be very good.

Hope this helps a bit.

Cheers

My 16v has been rolling road tested before and after the chip was fitted. It was 156bhp and is now 175bhp. I have to say for a cost of only £300 I am more than happy with the extra power.
