View Full Version : Cam Belt Change?
My dealer seems to think that the cambelt needs changing at 40K I was under the impression that it was at 60K for the TDi's ...
And also how much would you expect the dealer to charge?

By bizarre coincidence I have my warranty / service book with me today.
It quotes 60 thousand KM for the PD engine, and 90 thousand KM (56 thousand miles.....say 60 thousand) for non-pumpdeuse. Which is probably what is confusing your dealer.....
And also how much would you expect the dealer to charge?
Approximately 25% more than I thought he would....
Cheers Mik
Thats what I thought ! ..... my dealer does'nt need a lot to confuse them:rolleyes:
That surprises me....
Me: "Hi, I'd lke to arrange a warranty repair ~ I've got a faulty dimmer switch. I know it's a common fault on the Leon"
Them: (stroppy) "Who told you that?"
Me: "Lets just say I've spoken to several other Leon owners who ave this fault......will you have them in stock, 'cos I'd like to pick the car up after work"
Them: "yes of course sir"............
Whoooosh
Them: "Hello. You'll have to bring your car back in - I need to order parts"
Me: "Great. What have you done to it then?"
Them: "We diagnosed that your dimmer switch is faulty, but we don't have any in stock".
Me: "Well done......I'll get your coat......"
:hammer: :hammer:
VW really do need to put a rocket up these Seat dealers.
I really love my Leon but I would have to think hard before buying another as my local dealers are very poor.... I just hope VW can turn it around we need more dealers like Amethyst.
Them: "We diagnosed that your dimmer switch is faulty, but we don't have any in stock".
Are you sure they didn't say -
"We have been diagnosed as being dimmer faulty stock, but we don't have any switch."
:D
I think Cheshunt quote about £450 for a 60K service inc cam belt (ahhhh:( )
My dimmer switch was changed, no questions asked:D
£450 !!!!!! Gulp:eek:
Better start saving those pennies! .... least it dont need doing till 60K

Yeah, for me every 20 months:(
My Primera GT is much better, timing chain, no hassle. £160 for major service, £60 for minor service.....:D
Yep,
Had me Bammer 60k serviced just before Xmas and the near £500 bill still brings a f*ckin big lump to my throat. :(
Did you eat it to hide the evidence?
Reading your posts re cambelts here at Amethyst we change the belts at 40k, as this is what the workshop manual tells us.
Sorry guys i know this is a short interval but the cost of it snapping is loads more than replacing it.
A bit of light at the end of the tunnel is that the new tensioner that is fitted as part of the job then takes the next interval to a more acceptable 60K.
Hope this answers your questions

New tensioner ??? hummm.... could this be read:
"A faulty component that should be changed under warranty / recall but instead we get charged for it"
Usually as newer cars come out service intervals are increased. Only a few years ago the 1st service on a car was at the 7500km mark. Now its up to 15, 20, and I've even seen 30000km.
I know my beeza 110 was to have the belt changed at 90000Km intervals (I personally had it changed every 75000Km to be on the save side).
On my toledo 150 60000Km is the stated interval. I drive 75000Km a year which means 1 change at least once a year.
Cheesy to say the least... If I were to do the same thing as on beeza that would mean every 45000km or maybe every 30000km or even with every oil change;) :)

Surely if my cam belt breaks at 50K/2yrs it is a warrenty item, especially as my dealer states 60K for the change.
Out of interest, what does Amethyst charge for just a cam belt change (parts & Labour)??

As my Ibiza is now out of warranty, I've just had the cambelt done by a local VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda specialist. I had them do all the bits I didn't fancy doing- cambelt, PAS+Alternator belts (as they have to come off anyway), and a brake fluid change. They changed the tensioner and another roller the belt runs on. With that and all the filters I needed to finish the job off it was just under 300 quid- they charged 80 quid + parts for the belt change- the tensioner and the roller were about 35 each.
My service book states 60k miles for the TDi (non-PD) engine. My belt looked in good condition when it was off, but it's not worth chancing.
