I am sure I have read this before, but can't find it, so here we go again.

Is there any reason not to use the 12volt supply in the boot to power an amp, as this would save the ballache of running cables back through into the engine bay. has anyone successfully done this?

:cheers:

I suppose it is very possible to do this, i aint to sure however that the power cable would stand the power the amps gunna take.... or even the fuse (but this is easily changed) i aint no expert though.... but i think give it a try!

In theory it could be used for a 'small' amplifier. But if you were looking to put in something more hefty, say to power a sub, you will have to run proper 4 or 8 gauge power wires.

The reason you use the larger gauge wire is to carry the current to the amps, if you used the normal wire, it just wouldn't be able to feed the amp what it needed/wanted.

If you are looking at adding an amp then i would always install separate power wiring.

Yeah take a look at some 8 awg cable, or 4 awg like I've got :D :D :D and compare with the puney wire I imagine goes to that plug....

I'm sure the handbook says the socket is fused at something like 16 or 20 amps, so it a fairly hefty supply.

Cheers for the posts, I will have to try and find the manual for the amp (kenwood), and do the maths. Will let you know how I get on.

You have to run the cables from the battery. You can't power a sub through the serial plug.

Beleive me! Don't throw the money away....

Think about it...

Basic electronics..

Current = power / voltage

So your 600W peak amp is going to pull 50 amps through that cable...

Have you ever put a bit of wire wool across one of those batteries with the springs on the top?
(if not, try it. it will demonstrate this ninely).

warm, warmer, hot, hotter, melting, POOF, flames....
