OK, I managed to get to work on my doors yesterday. I took the inner panel off, stuck a hose on the outside and left it. Fifteen minutes later, absolutely no water had got in to the door, it was either staying outside or draining through the holes. So I can safely say that I don't have the normal door panel issues.
So what I did was shut the door and apply the water to the roof. Lo and behold, wet feet when I opened the door. From what I could see, the water was coming in through the gap between the doors;

running down the door shut;

And down on to the sill;

Trouble is, I think that is by design? So I'm wondering if the water is getting under the rubber seal and into the car? But as far as I could tell, that rubber seal (the grey rubber rather than the black metalwork in the last picture) was bonded to the chassis, and doesn't move.
The back door had the same behaviour, water running down the seam ended up at the foot panel. So now I know why I get wet feet, I just need to know why my carpets are getting wet...
