I have the misfortune of having a black mark on my driving license, more specifically a DR10 (drink drive):(

Obviously each year that i renew my insurance, it goes down as its another year since i was done. The problem i have is that my policy is up for renewal on the 23rd July and i was done on the 1st August 2001. Therefore, when my policy is up for renewal this year Direct Line see it as me being good for a further year - 2 in total in their eyes, whereas in reality its 7 days short of 3 years. I'm obviously loosing out on the drop in premium for it being 3 years and not 2.

I rang Direct Line last night and asked if this was correct and the girl said yes but there was little she could suggest as they only do 12 month policies and won't insure me for a week so as i can benefit.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Could i find a broker that would insure me for a week/ 10 days to take me on to 1st August then start my Direct Line policy again? Also could i do this without losing my (full) no-claims (if i lose that then my insurance would be sky high)?

If the cost of insurance decreases dramatically with an extra year then it may be worth taking out a years insurance and then cancelling it. Don't know how is works exactly, but you would get a prorata refund minus some admin fee.

Alternatively, lock your car in the garage for a week and take the bus. Then renew the insurance.

Yeah, take it out with someone like CIS and pay monthly. Then simply cancel when required.

From my past experience, CIS are very flexible.. you may get a competitive quote and they could just take into consideration your conviction expires.. worth giving them a ring - or better still, phone up and get your local agent - **yes they have local agents** to come out to you.

Good point Ian, my mum & dad have some insurance through CIS and have a local agent that comes round. Next time he's over, i'll ask him and see what he says.

i hope its not a mistake you are ever going to repeat.

When i first started to drive, I forgot I had the car with me one night and had 3 alcopops. I did drive it home, carefully, thinking i was driving fine and then realising of course I *thought* i was driving fine, coz of the alcohol. I don't drink now anyway but I won't even have one if I know I'm going to drive.

Whenever you start a new policy, I think by law you get a 14 days "cooling off period" in which you can cancel the contract ;)
Best check first though!
