View Full Version : 8v Gti full spec anyone?
Hi guys,
Thinking of getting an 8V GTI - R reg 97. I used to have a T reg Cupra Sport a few years back. Somewhere I have on old brochure but can't for the life of me find it.
Does anyone have a full spec listing for the 97 model?
I want to know for sure if it has ABS (I'm pretty sure it does)
Any info would be appreciated.
Scott
I'll dig it out if i can
Might have ABS, might be a Cupra badged GTI, might be a Cupra
many options
why?

Cheers Mark,
Pretty sure it's just a GTI. Single airbag no cuprasport badge, no sunroof no alloy door sills.
Why? Thinking of getting it for the Mrs. Then I can fiddle with the car at weekends and maybe chuck it around on track when she isn't looking. ;) :D

I think all GTis had ABS but Cupra Sports didn't until later on. Mine hasn't got it (as you may have noticed at Haynes). I've never missed it though, the odd lock up makes ragging it a bit more exciting!
i had a 98R cupra 8v and that didnt have abs
spec change was very loose over 97-98 so have a look for a abs pump under the bonnet

I may be wrong, but I thought all GTis had sunroof and possibly twin airbags. Cupra Sport was the lower spec of the two.

Unless you get one that's a GTI and Cupra Sport on the V5 and has it's own spec.:p

They seemed to change the spec on mk2 Beezer GTI's every week, then there was the 'plus pack' model aswell.
Easiest way to check whether it had ABS is to see whether the warning light comes on when you put the igintion on - that way you won't even have to get your hands dirty opening the bonnet!

How much are these things going for anyway nowadays? They seem to come in and go out of fashion all the time, some you see advertised for a couple of grand some you see up for 5k - I'm tempted to chuck the old Golf in the bin and get one, but only if it's CHEAP!
over a year ago I looked at one with 42k on the clock (cupra no abs, but sunroof) and that was 3.5k
cheaper & cheaper
Just phoned the dealer - no ABS. :(
This one is £3560 with 50k miles on the clock and is in really good nick.
Prolly going to get it - just need confirmation on what the dealer is going to give us for the wife's old car.

I have an original dealer spec/brochure for th1 1997 Ibiza range, so can look there is you need. Its a well nice mint copy that I got on ebay.

Didn't know you had that - I'll have to have a nose.
Scott - 50k will be just about nicely run in then. I wouldn't worry about the lack of ABS, it's never bothered me. What colour is it?
Cheers Ryan. I've got one somewhere as well. I just need to tear the attic apart to find it. ;)
The main reason for the change in car is to get something a bit safer for the wife. I'm not happy with the Hyaundi Atoz she's pootering around in at the moment.
ABS was something I really wanted her next car to have. :(
Steve, it's bronze metallic. Wouldn't have been my first choice but she likes it. :)

Syphon, is the one your looking at, at Holders Congresbury, as I see they have a R-reg Cupra in Copper?

I think it's just standard Seat alarm and immob. Don't think it's thatcham approved.

My wife had a Black Magic 97R 8v cupra sport..it had ABS and swirly alloys..
As far as safety goes she had a head on while she was driving round a corner..her speedo read 52mph..the other panel van was probably doing about 40mph..
Airbag went off and my wife , my three month old baby and seven year old son all survived...
My baby in a childseat suffered no injuries...my seven year old in the back a broken collar bone due to seat belt and my wife hurt more but alive...
Much safer than an Atoz Scott.
She now drives its replacement .. a 98S Natural copper metallic 8v cupra sport.
It was bought new but its a total shed now she's had it for four years......
Safe and reliable though....
You'll find it a bit underpowered after your LCR though....
Like ..who's nicked the engine?

More money then..... Bl00dy insurers want proof of a thatcham 1 kit.

Cheers Mark. I knew they were tough. Glad your family were ok.
I used to have an 8v Cupra Sport - my first "sporty car" :) I loved it to bits.
Test drove this one - yes it feels a bit slow compared to mine, but it's more than fast enough for the wife. :) (going from a 1 litre!) However, dare I say it the engine sounded nicer than the Leon's! :)
Need to budget for the extra alarm now though. :(

T Reg is where the ABS appeared as standard. Unless it had one of the plus packs. Sunroof's where not standard on 8v's at all (excepting plus pack).
Alarms where Thatcham T2 on the T regs dunno for earlier)
Dor.
they were thatcham class2 approved immobilisers, but some strange quirk in thatcham ratings means that unless its represented every year it loses its classification, or something like that anyway
Admiral never asked me for an alarm certificate either. Tescos always seem to be competitive too.

I have a Clifford Virtual Key 2 Immobiliser fitted to mine, but the insurers didnt specify it, although when I asked for a quote from Privelage they did.
Not a major expensive immobilser I think (mind you was already fitted when I bought the car) and its Thatcham Cat 2.

The changeover from the GTi to the Cupra was a bit of a messy affair and when the Gti was dropped in favour of the cupra sport some of the Gti's still in the dealer system were simply badged Cupra sports when in fact as yours you still had a sunroof etc which was never on any spec sheets for the cupra sport.
They also dropped in price from £13500 to £11500 so whoever bought your car had a spawny deal..:)
They got a Gti but paid cupra sport money for it.

None of the non cupra sport GTI 8v's had ABS IIRC (excepting plus pack ones).

Wrong. I looked at a 2nd hand Volcano Red (lovely colour) 8v GTI - also at Holders, oddly enough - a couple of months before I finally bought my Cupra Sport. That definitely had ABS - I recall the salesman having a fit when I was forced to try it out on the test drive. It also had a factory roof. Full GTI spec, NOT a Cupra Sport.

Not Wrong :p
That's an add on pack - the givaway is the sunroof.
Dor.
I would imagine that most GTis had the add on pack then as I haven't seen any without sunroof.

My 2.0 16V cupra sport GTi is a 1997 (P) and that has ABS and the twin airbags as standard (If thats any help!) P.S It's for sale if anyone wants to check it out!!:D
my 8v on an r plate has no abs,no passenger airbag,no aircon and no alloy sills - it has a sunroof, but its an aftermarket one!
I like the lack of gizmos, just think of the weight savings! seems to fly more than a fully spec 16v ibiza I tried

So just how much weight does ABS, and airbags take up then?!! Whats the power output of an 8V? I thought it was 115BHP compared to the 150BHP of a 16V?
P.S sorry if I hijacked the thread with the questions above just interested while on the subject ta!

8 Valves too many! :p
Dor.
I must admit I test drove a 16v a while back and didn't think it felt any quicker than my 8v. It was probably just the difference in power delivery tho.

Just my perception, the low down torque of the 8v may just make it feel nippier. Plus! most 8v's make around 120-125bhp, and mines well run in and loosened up with 85k on the clock.
I would have thought the aircon system would weigh quite a bit?
Ok. We're going for the car. :D
Picking it up at the end of next week all being well.
I've just spoken to the dealer and it seems that it is actually an R (97) reg 8V GTI Cupra Sport after all. :D
No ABS
No Sunroof
No Aircon
The previous owner had just removed the Cupra Sport stickers.
I'm nearly as excited as the wife about it (and it's her car)!
Will post pics etc. when it is in our posession.

It's not so much the weight but the additional drag the compressor puts on things...

ABS
Driver Airbag
No Sunroof
No Aircon
W@nk pink and blue Cupra Sport badges (carefully disposed of as soon as i got the car as were the GTI badges)
Heated Mirrors>driver side not working
Leather steering wheel and gear knob
Its black which looks kinda metalflaked if the sun shines on it. Anyone know what the actual colour is called? Is it black magic?
