View Full Version : help for the MAF sensor!

Following all the recent MAF failures, I decided I would see if I could source a cheap one from work i.e Ford as I know Ford also use some Bosch MAF sensors.

Firstly, I couldn't find a Ford MAF that had the same voltage-airflow transfer function so I then had a chat with a friend who is a component engineer for Ford MAF sensors.

One interesting thing he mentioned is that one of the general Bosch guidlines for the installation of MAF sensors is that they should be installed vertically +/- 10 degrees. This is to help drain off any condesate that may accumulate on the sensor.

On my ibiza, I noticed that the MAF is mounted almost horizontal!
I can only imagine package constraints and assembly tool access lead to Seat placing the MAF in this location.

I have therefore rotated my MAF sensor round so it is now vertical which I am able to do as I have a dynatwist. With the standard airbox this is not possible as the MAF bolts rather than clamps to the the airbox.

I know condensation doesn't seem to have been a problem with the Vag MAFS (mainly oil contamination or vibration) but it's something thats easy to do, free and might help in the long run!

Just wondering as i was told that it cud b that wen my car failed emissions test.

quite likely as a faulty maf may cause the car to run rich reducing the cat performance considerably.

Our ever busy Paulo (prc) has researched this for us. :)

Read all about it HERE (http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=28247&highlight=MAF)

or run to lean depending on what the faulty reading the MAF is giving out. the major problem is its a gradual thing so a lot of people get used to them beinf dufff. and dont realise until they drive another car.

Disconnect the MAF completely. If there is a drop in performance then you know that the MAF is fine, if on the other hand the car performs better then you know the MAF isn't healthy. Mine was knackered, performed so much better when i disconnected it.

Got a new one imported from www.ecstuning.com in the end. £75 all in including shipping etc. Job done :D

that one from the link above - is it better than the std one, or is that just the same?
