Hi,

Can you give any advice on what oil to use with a service for our 53 plate Mk1 Leon Cupra r,

Its the 1st service I've had to do since we bought the car which is due at 68k

The car has been remapped which i understand alters which oil is best for it.

Other than that the car is standard.

any advice greatful

Hi Graham

The oil you need depends on the service schedule the car is on. If it is on an annual/10k miles service, you need an oil that meets the 505.01 specification. If it's the variable service schedule, you need an oil that meets the 507.00 spec. With the car being remapped, I'd stick to annual servicing and one of the 5w-40 full synthetic oils.

505.01 - http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-751-vw-50501-oil.aspx
507.00 - http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-754-vw-50700-oil.aspx

They are all good oils, so make your decision based on any brand/price preference you have.

Tim

Hi thanks for the quick reply,

The car was last serviced at 58k so i'm guessing its on 10k annual intervals,

thinking of the titan gti oil ?

Hi there oilman,

Could you tell me what the difference if any between 505.00 spec and the 505.01 ??

the reason i ask is i've come across some shell helix 5w-40 which says vw spec 505.00 I'm wondering if I can use it to service the leon or whether I need to purchase some 505.01 spec from the link above

thanks

Hi Gray

There is a pretty big difference between 505.00 and 505.01. 505.01 oils are needed for the PD engines as they are able to cope with the high pressures they have to go through. A 505.00 can't cope with the pressure and will break down, leading to cam wear.

Cheers

Does our Mk1 LCR need the 505.01 spec oil then? I just topped up the car with a little bit of that shell oil if its gonna cause problems I'll get it changed asap

Thanks g

That's a better description than I would have given, thanks.

Gray, yes, it really should be changed. I doubt it's done much harm in a short time, but long term it can do.

Hi, I just read that it relates to diesel engines, I have a 1.8t petrol engine?? Is that correct, now I'm really getting confused

Ah, that clears things up a bit. As you were asking about 505.00 and 505.01 spec oils, I assumed you have a diesel. As it's not the diesel, ignore what's been said, the Shell is fine.

Corrr, that's a relief. Just so I know for future what is the correct spec of oil required for the 2004 1.8T petrol leon cupra r is it the 505.00 or 504 / 503

Sorry I'm a bit confused with all the specs

I know the shell helix is 505.00 which is ok

Is it ok to use on our 75k remapped engine

Hi

The standard choice would be a 503.00 oil, and the Helix meets the 503.01, so will be fine. With the VW petrol specs, I wouldn't be too worried, as long as the car is out of warranty. The diesels are a bit different as modern ones will need a 505.01 for the PD engines, a 506.01 for some of the Touregs and Transporters or a 507.00 for any of the new cars fitted with DPFs.

Thanks for that, I can use most good oils then, did get a bit concerned for a while, what do most people tend to use with these.
I used the titan gt1 5w 40 last time it was serviced.

I ran out of the 5l topping it up about 5500miles after the service and switched to the shell becuase I had it floating about. Is that normal do you think

Yes, most good oils are suitable. The popular choice for your car is a 5w-40 synthetic and the Fuchs you had last time is a really good choice.
