own a 97 GTi cupra sport 2.0 8v (AGG)

recently car has been cutting out randomly and some times doesnt start. now, my key fob wont open the locks so have to use the key in the door.

Had rac out 3 times first it was my leads then second time the dizzy cap and rotor arm. 3rd time he told me it was my coil that was away.

all were fine as i went to a local garage yesterday and he checked them all out and it was fine.

so me and the mechanic went out for a drive and as we were going along he witnessed the same problem (thank god) that i was experiencing it was cutting out then jumping back in to life. its like a power loss for a split second. and you can here a clicking from the fuse box (sounds like a relay clicking on and off which he thinks is maybe the fuel pump relay but checked it and its fine)

so he checked all the fuse box and couldnt see anything there. then went to the engine bay and he checked for a spark. it fired the what he called primary spark then followed by nothing. put the lead back on and it wouldnt start. he then checked for power going to the "hall affect" and there was no power going there. he then fed it with 12v from a power source and i heard the fuel pump initiate and the car started. basically he said the power wasnt going to the distributer as there was no volt readin at the hall affect.

he then came to the conclusion that its my imobiliser causing all these problems as its stopping power to the hall affect.

i tried synchronising the key/re-programming it as the owners manual says but nothing happens until i tried late last night the re-programming worked, the doors locked but the key wouldnt open them again(key bat is fine as red light flashes) then, the alarm went off and stopped once i popped the bonnet.

any1 experienced anything like this at all? any help or advice would be greately appreciated.

am convinced it is the imobiliser as my key doesnt operate the central locking. any1 any idea if this can be fixed or need replacing and how much a could be lookin at as its booked in to a seat dealer mon 9th feb.

thanks in advance, andrew

this is a real long shot.

stick ur key in the ignition barrel.

(after uv switched off the immobiliser - if it works...)

basically, turn ur key slowly to try and start the engine.

ur stereo should come on, then if u keep turning, the engine should start... hopefully.

what im getting at is, with mine, there's a point were the stereo will switch on and off like mad, and a relay some-where will flick like mad. I've not had the engine cut out on me yet, but i know there may be a problem with my ignition barrel.

hope u get it sorted anyway,

(end of long shot)

i had this on my old valver, turned out to be the ignition coil, may not be the case here ,but it sounds similar.
£60 odd iirc

i had a cut out problem like this, does it cut out when you lift off after hard acceleration?

mine was down to a lead from the coil to the bat(i think it was that lead)that had completly cut in two from ware and tear.when the car was stationary the two ends touched and when put on diagnostics at seat they kept saying everything was fine.Only when the car was under load did the engine move just enough to separate the two ends causing it to stop.

three trips to the seat dealer and they couldnt find this out, it was only when i dropped a bolt down by this lead that i found it.

might not be this, but give a little pull on all the leads around this area and see if they are loose.

my cars not here @ the moment so cant go and see which lead it was.

I have had the same problem with this engine on mine, the fuel pump relay would click out and on. After seat had had it for three weeks they found a brocken connection on the back of the relay board and put a link over it. Have had no problems for a yaer now.
