Si, it depends on what you are looking for in your ICE system.
Personally if it was me I would go for the following.
Alpine Commander head unit
Apline CD Changer
Focal Components for the front
Kicker or Rockford Fostgate 12" sub
Kicker / Rockford Fostgate Amp
that would probably be a bit more than a grand, then you would also need cabling etc....
That should produce a top notch sound!
C ya....
;)
Sorted mate cheers,
Cant change the head unit though can you?
So what i would like is 6 x 9's
Mids
1 x 12"
Amp
?
Si
Si
Pete and I looked at the Alpine commander units, but couldnt find any tho:(
I wouldnt bother with 6x9's, i'd go with some decent components and a good amp & sub.
I got dome Kenwood PSR70P Dual Mags for £110, and a Rocky 12" sub (RF3412) and a Rocky Punch 400.4 amp.
Sound great and doesnt cost anywhere near a grand, around £500-£600
If you wanted, you could go for the JL Audio W3 series subs, then look at maybe some Focal or Diamond Audio Components.
The choice is yours!!!

Was looking at a £4K install for someone on here... Not telling who but most regulars will know...
Anyway for £1k you can have a nice upgrade. Keep the standard HU until there's an easy way to sort it.
Get some JL VR650CS Components in the doors and one ( OR two...   ) JL 12w3 subs. If you wanna spend more then some Diamond or Focal comps would be nice...
Then you just need an amp... If you can get a convertor you could go for a genesis or high end PG amp. Otherwise get a RF 600.4 or something and use the rear speaker wires as the high level input. Forget rear speakers it'll sound sweet anyway..

Or you could buy tony's install (sqplus), and spend a little extra upgrading your speakers. see my post in accessories for sale!!!
Promised him I'd try to sell it!
Si,
I'd recommend 1 x 12" sub, small components in the front doors, slightly larger ones in the back doors, and sum nice tweeters in the front. The Alpine headunits r the tits, I agree with whoever suggested them :D
Come check out myself and my mates systems during the week mate. It'll b a good comparison between hearing 6x9s and components combined with 12"s....give u a good idea of quality differences.
Possibly Wednesday, lemmi know if yur interested and havent already gone and splashed out ;)

Why larger components in the back? At the end of the day you don't go to a concert and face away from the band. You need good stuff up front and bass. Rear speakers are only useful for lifting volume levels Nova boy styleeeee, or lifting the sound but then they are much quieter than the front's.
I'd have to dissagree with the Alpine thing though. Sorry Mr Alpine but when I buy a head unit I don't want to have to keep sending it back for repairs. I've had two bad uns and know of loads of mates who have had problems. They sounds great, when they work, but I prefer reliability..
I don't want to start an arguement though, I know many of you are probably very happy with your Alpines...
Pete
Im happy with mine Pete :)
Must be the way you wire em up ;) (me jests) :D

hahahaha, yeah those ISO connectors can be a bit tricky... hehehehe :D
I had one that went back to Alpine three times and each time it came back with the same fault... ( wouldn't read CD's )
And Mikes new HU is faulty and the remote turn on has buggered up. It might just be a fuse but I've never had any trouble with Kennys...
Pete
Ive had 3 now myself, never had a problem. In fact i can say without a doubt they have all been the best Headunits ive owned, the latest one is just fantastic.
I did stray for a while and bought Panasonics, but though the Fx85 i had first was superb the others were lacking in quality and sound capability.
Never had Kenny's though i've not heard anyone complain, (oh except Marts had trouble with his i believe).
As they say though you go on personal experience, if you've had bad experiences you tend to stray away in the future, im sure if id had these problems id be anti Alpine too.
The Rockford Headunits are very trick though. :)

I've not tried the Rocky ones, but I'm half tempted.... Only problem is I like stealthy and they only come in silver, which stands out a bit in an otherwise black dash... :D
Pete
Yup i know what you mean sort of put me off, though my Alpine is silver its more subtle with a Dark screen/face. The Gun metal Rockys look grand, but do stick out a bit.
But then again i never leave my HU on show anyway, i always take it out.
Icecavern
28-01-2002, 13:35
Yeah but the plate behind the face is silver too. So when you take the front off it's still obvious. My kenny blends in so well with the dash you'd have to look carefully to notice anything is there..... Maybe a Nakamichi would be better.... :D :D :D
Pete
Wow :)
Didnt realise they were silver underneath, thats a bit daft.
Yup remove my Alpine and its as dark as the interior.
Take out the second mortgage for some Nakimichi, though asthetically Nakimichi is ugly as sin :p But great insides :)

Beauty is only skin deep Mark, as I well know being ugly as sin... hehehe
I really want one of the metal ones... Nice brushed ali face etc. If I remember right it's ony a couple of grand, give or take a thousand..... :D :D :D
Pete
hehe how true :D that your ugly that is ;)
Hmm only ever seen the black ones, im off browsing for a nice Nakimichi :)

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.... :p :p :p :p
go to www.nakamichi.com and look at the CD-700. I want one....

Sorry I got the price wrong... Cheapest price I've seen is $1300 but it's about $1800 retail..
Pete
Alpine HU quality is still the bollox Petey boy, despite yurs having Vauxhaul build quality :D
Kenwood kettles r *ok*...nice midrangey sound
Sony is *treble happy*
The point of having larger components in the back is so the midrange quality is split, giving a better alround sound, with the smaller front components picking up a slightly higher frequency. It prob doesnt make a hell of a lot of difference, but hey :p
Cheers guys, dunnoo what has happened to the thread, seems to fallen apart..... so I normally listen to Pete as he is the sensible one lol!
Smithy ....... Might see if I can get out on Wed, you have my mobile number text me and let me know!!!

Me? Sensible? Never..... :D :D
Anyway all that happened is the thread turned into a discussion on HU... Actually I don't really know how that happened but it was fun...
Oh and I've found a UK dealer huets. The CD-700 is only £1499, I'll have two please, one for the car and one as a spare.... hehehe
Pete
Ha ha ha ..... lol!
so am I any nearer to seeing what I can get for a grand then lol?

Yes mate look at my first post. I'd recommend the JL gear, top quality and the prices are reasonable. It's just the amp you need to decide on. RF make stormin' 4 channelers a 600.4 would be nice :D :D Or you can go for an MTX. American amps put out more bang per £ usually.
(plug mode)Actually I've got an MTX 250D digital amp for sale £150 boxed as new with a Certificate to prove 350wrms at 2ohms from 12v..
It's got high level inputs and it switches on and off automatically without a remote lead...(/plug mode)
Run that with a JL12w3 - D4 and it'll sound sweeeeeet....
Pete
I've had loads of different head units, both radio/cass and CD + also Cd changers... ( I used to buy duffers and fix them... )
I also hate buying brand new unless its reduced!! ...
My fav and in my experience the best built and also the most reliable.. Is Alpine kit...
I have had 3 Alpine decks of varying age and they allways sounded great and sold easily... The lack of fancy crap, and solid
build puts tham ahead of any other make..
( go into any Halfords store, wiggle the fronts on the stereo displays, only Apline will feel snuggly fitted, the rest will move around loosley )
Sony, Kenwood and Pioneer are awfull, plasticky cheap face's, that have connection problems after 6 months use, bad design on the control layouts and on some of the most recent designs
pointless graphics..
The interior wiring quality is also crap...
My other fav for value for money is JVC, better than the other lot any way.....
Dazz
Will be getting a New ( god forbid ) Alpine setup when I'e got the new motor!!! :D
Okay, so the moment its too expensive to change the head unit in a beeza!
So I am after 1 x 12" Sub and an Amp to run it?
and mids and 6 x 9's?
Anyone give me any models and then I can look at a price?
Cheers.

An RF 12" sub, or a JL 12W3 would do you nicely. The 12w3 should still be on offer at £159.
As for amps you want anything with loads of power and high level
inputs... An RF 200.1 maybe. Or my 350wrms MTX! :D
Forget the 6x9's and get some decent components up front instead, JL VR650CS, Kenwood ??70p, Focal...
Try www.cel-direct.com or www.caraudiodirect.com for some prices...
Pete
Pete,
Many thanks, I am still toying with the idea of having a weekend near yours and giving you the car for a day to do me a build what do you think?
Cheers.
Si
Si,
Did a *test* 2nite, to compare sound systems
My Car
2 x 12" Alpines 600W each
2 x 4 channel 200W Sony 6x9s
Mates Golf
2 x 12" VIBE 800W each
4 x Infinity Components
Both played identicle tunes at the same time, parked nx 2 eachother with boots open.
Result - 3 out of 3 neutral mates rated my (approx £400) system better and just as loud as my mates (£900) system
:D
I was WELL chuffed ....he got upset and drove off ;)
we have to arrange a lil meeting matey :p
lol, I'll bet he was pissed off mate, was good to meet you last night and for you to meet the shitter ( was I talking car or Nicci?)
Yeah I really need to get some ICE in the old car cos its doing me head in I can tell ya!
Anytime your around give us a bell or come up to the flat!
Cyas
Si
Was good to meet u and Nicci too, bloody nice car :p
yeah, he was well pissed off and drove off :D btw, he got a nose bleed yesterday while driving with his system on max LOL
From ASDA underground carpark, one of my judging mates said he could hear wot tune was playing from the doors of the ASDA entrance. :D
During the week, I'll get him down aswell, as long as we're still on talking terms, so u have a comparison thing.
Nx step is me and him doing a speed test :D A10 is the venue hehe
I'll txt u in the week
Take care

That's fine by me.. You'll need to let me know what weekends to make sure I'm about and so I can get the materials in ( For some strange reason I don't seem to be able to keep mdf in stock... :D :D )
Thing is it depends on what sort of build you want. To be honest a day isn't very long really, but it depends on what you want.. What I need is the back end of a written off beeza, with a fully intact boot area... :D :D :D
Pete
Pete, did you tell me how much it costs to sort out the head unit on a Mk3 Ibiza?
And please could you drop me a line back about Donny!

I've replied mate... Hell YES!!!! :D :D
What do you mean by sort the head unit? If you mean to fit a DIN unit then it depends who you get to do it?? :p :p
Nobody has been brave enough to let me have their motor for a couple of days to do one, although I don't think it would be too difficult. I recon you'd be looking at something like this..
Pete
Cool, I think we will have to have a chat at Donny bout that....where did you reply to?
SI
Someones actually done it or is at this moment experimenting.
i saw the pics the other day, here in the forums. Looked just as Pete has theorised.
Do a search its only recently its been posted up.

Pete, I wouldnt mind getting a head unit fitted in the dash as you have shown. I will be at Donny aswell, so I will talk to you then about it.
