On Sunday i did an oil check as it was just on the min level i topped up but i found a creamy white goo on the inside of the cap. My mate tells me this means my head gasket is fooked, the oil is relativley clean can anyone give me pointers on what im going to have to do abouth this, is my mate right about the Gasket and in what price range its repair.
creamy white goo on the inside of the cap.
really.................. :D
.... just so im not taking this piss. im having oil troubles with my mk2 aswell , lovely oil leakage from underneath the car. I await the diagnosis of the problem ...... and so does my credit card.
Hoping its just a seal or gasket thats gone :)
Could be simply condensation, especially if doing short journeys. If you're using only minute quantities of oil don't worry about it.

As Ed says, if you use the car for short journeys (particularly at this time of year) you'll get condensation occuring and producing small amounts of "creamy white goo" on the inside of the cap.
If the gasket HAS gone, you'll usually also find that your coolant level drops and may notice some oily deposits in the header tank.
If you're not getting through loads of oil and/or coolant, then it's probably nothing to worry about.

Yeah same with my mk2 Golf at the moment, which is used around town most of the time (what a waste of a GTI! struggling to do 20mpg this time of year!!!!).
Slight creamy deposit on the oil cap should only be consensation, may have a small amount of residue on the dipstick too as that's where some of the 'steam' will go.
You will notice coolant loss quite soon if the head gasket is going, and often engine will overheat but the coolant guage won't necessarily be in the 'hot' zone, but you may hear the bubbling of the water.
