Well I had some fun on Saturday as I fitted my tuning box to my Ibiza.

I bought the box from eBay for a mere £149, I made sure I got one with the extra maf connecting wire as is believe these are a bit more complex than just the plug through boxes, and as such should give me a bit more power. It was bought as a Diesel Tech box but when it was sent through its basically a speedbuster unit which is selling for £249 on eBay so I was very happy indeed, I believe that they don’t make the 90/110 tuning box anymore hence why they have been sold off on eBay, but their website is www.speed-buster.co.uk

I also made sure that the box I was buying was TUV approved so that it meets some safety standards and hopefully wont trash my engine, also it comes with a 1 year guarantee which should be good enough.

I had to get a spade connector which splices into the maf wire from orangesproat as it wasn’t supplied with one. The instructions said to solder the cable but I wanted a removable solution so the splice connector works perfectly.

Started off taking the engine cover off and locating the fuel pump connector and unplugging, unfortunately on the Ibiza TDI engine the intercooler pipe runs straight over the top of this and makes access really hard so after having to unclip various other items in the area to get my hand in and plugged in the pass though box. I then routed the actual chip behind the battery as JonTDI has done and then spliced the black maf wire from the loom and plugged in the spade connector. All in all took about 45 mins I guess, would have been so much easier on the golf TDI installation as their intercooler pipes don’t run over the pump.

I initially turned the adjuster screw on it to high but it didn’t stop spinning, I thought I would hit a top point and a low point like a volume control but it didn’t, just kept spinning so I had to do a test run to see where I was. Initially I had set it far too high and the engine was very lumpy below 1500rpm and sooted loads, backed this off over several turns of the screw and several stops and finally found a sweet spot for max power and no lumpiness. Then went for a burn! :D

And all I can say is WOW!! The improvement is amazing, its got more pull completely though the rev range and its soo easy to hit the rev limiter now, its still very slightly lumpy at about 1000-1200rpm but a quarter turn back should sort this.

The improvement is immediately noticeable and the surge of power is amazing, some serious tyre shredding could take place. Unfortunately my test drive was in the wet so had loads of wheelspin in 1st 2nd and 3rd! Orange recommended backing it off a little from max as it becomes hard work in the wet which I think I will agree with, but it wont be set very far from max, I like the power too much..

The box says 30bhp and 50ft lb of torque improvement, so on that line I should have about 140bhp and 224ft lb of torque which is lovely, i've always wanted a TDI 130 sport from my first test drive before I got my 110 and now I have one. Lovely!

Also the improved fuel economy promised by the box seems about right, i've done the power testing on Saturday then a trip into town and out to a meal on Sunday then I did a run to Exeter from Plymouth yesterday at 75mph on the dual carriageway and a little fun at the start and end of the trip and the overall mpg for the entire 195 miles is showing 67mpg, normally it would show about 57mpg so when I do my brim to brim calculations I will test for sure, but it looks very promising indeed.

So more power and more economy…. Cant go wrong really

I’m gonna be getting vag-com soon so a few power runs to establish bhp and torque will be done and we will see. Will also turn off the EGR and advance the timing by 5 so should see a little more power there as well.

Oh and Ian you will be please as upon hard acceleration I can now leave a little soot trail, before I was a clean boy

Someone's a happy bunny !! ;)

Well done mate, looks like you got a bit of bargain there.

At the moment I can't justify spending the extra cash and buying a new car. So I'm going to stick with mine for now.

But should the opportunity arise in the future, I think a 110 Sport will be coming my way !! ;)

Enjoy Stew. Best money I ever spent, aswell.
Running full whack all the time will see some serious tyre wear & traction can be an issue if wet/snow/ice.
Still leaves a silly grin on my face, even when running at setting 5.:D

Had to take my box out, due to service last week. You definately notice the lack of pull & eagerness to rev over 2K rpm.
But it was only for a day. Still feels quicker & handles better than the Leon 1.4 16V loan car!!!:D

I'll take a picture of mine - But I can remove the lid an adjust the screw in the unit...... Add a K & N Filter, turn your EGR off - You enjoy more then!!!

OrangeSprout.

I completely remove box & connectors. Simple enough.

1. whip off engine cover.
2. slide off the injection pump connector from bracket.
3. push clip back with screwdriver for both box & original connector. 4. refit orginal connector back into injection pump.
5. unplug MAF connector.
6. remove box from behind battery.
7. refit engine cover.

Takes about 10 mins.
Dealer didn't have a clue.

What's wrong with a performance filter on a diesel?
You won't gain much, but in the end it's cheaper than replacing the OE filter.

Think it's about £40 for the green filter. Go to the discount section and check under badger5. Bill gives us a nice discount.

It was putting out around 130bhp standard, so the box adds an extra 25ishbhp.

Or Banshee motors for the K&N - Although Badger does these too

Circa £40 is correct.. Made mine breath free'er...

Beware of issues regarding aftermarket filters and MAF problems...lots of discussions about this.
In a nutshell the K&N is a more oily filter than the Green filter, and some reckon it might make your MAF more prone to failure....

If the oiled cotton gauze panel filters are a problem, has anyone tried the foam panel filters?

The foam one are much worse!!!!
They use twice as much oil, plus the oil is super sticky and thick.
I seriously think the whole issue thing is a load of cr@p. I have friends that have gone through more MAF's than I have and use standard paper filters.

you managed to adjust back yet stew?

sssstew
13-02-2004, 11:11
yeah turned it back 1/4 and tested and its still a little lumpy when in gear, off throttle and between 1-1200 rpm like when your slowing down, just means you have to put the clutch in or change to higher gear, not too much of a worry. im more that happy with the increase in performance and mpg.

thats odd - i don't have any trouble at all - you might be overfuelling it still.

One benefit of simpler 7 stage adjust - yours is probably infinite.

sssstew
13-02-2004, 11:33
yeah the screw just turns for ever on mine so it seems infinite. I could probably turn it back another whole turn and see if the slight lumpyness goes, but then me dont want to loose the peformance for a mere 200rpm at the low bits. time will tell.
