Does anyone know if it is possible to interchange ECU's between cars of the same engine type/code .. ie AYP .Or does the ECU have a rolling code immobiliser feature or indeed just a static code that needs needs to be verified when the ignition is turned on

not impossible to do - but certainly not a plug in swap over

needs options coding - mileage - immobiliser - all sorts of sh1te

but with the correct kit not impossible

Can you 'adjust' the milage then? ;)

Actually, IIRC you can increase the milage, but not decrease it.

So, what tools do you need to be able to swap the ECU over? VAG-COM?

on a new replacement you can add fresh mileage ONCE only

and most times it in KM to start - which is erm slightly confusing as one techie found out when a car lost 6000 miles LOL

and yes Vag-Com or 5051/1551 etc to do adaptation

PI55 easy to swap an ECU! Done it a few times, aslong as its the same car/engine etc.... Simple As, unplug ECU put in new car, switch on ignition, plug in Vag com, adaption, enter code, take key out ignition for 15sec, then start car. Guide here (http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/immobilizer2.html)

like shock says - with vag com (or other correct kit) P155 easy

borrowed from vag com link :

1- Install the new ECU in the car
[Select]

[17 - Instruments]

[Adaptation - 10]
Leave channel at "00"

[Read]

[Save]

2- [Done, Go Back]

[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

[Exit]

3-Turn ignition OFF for 15 seconds. Start vehicle.

(nice link Shock - took me 20 lines to write in plain english LOL)

I thought mileage is stored in the instrument cluster and not ECU
