View Full Version : MK2 tubro conversion?
I'm Thinking of putting a tubro on my 2lt 16v cupra sport.
Got a couple of questions.
1st) Has it be done before and ifso by who?
2nd) would a standard MK3 20vt Manifold with down pipe (from the tubro) fit onto a MK22?
Any help would greatfull
Mike.
It was done to a cordoba 16v about 6 years ago.
It ate driveshafts and blew up frequently, the abf doesnt like forced induction, especially turbos as altering the compression weakens the head from memory.
Ill have a dig around and see if i can find the article.

You really would do far better to drop a 1.8 20vT straight into it. That's not to say that such an engine swap would be an "easy" job but there's more to forced induction than just plumbing a turbo into the exhaust...
Just to throw another spanner into the works, there are 16v turbo kits out in the states and with the $ so low it can make serious financial sense. Guide price US$1500 full kit IIRC.
didn't know they did a 16v in the states.....
turbo technics stopped making the manifolds, so unless you can find one (which you won't) then you're stuffed

Yes ABF was Euro only but they got plenty 16v's and a multitude of kits out there, although a lot of them are probably the same with a different name on it.

That's another kettle of fish, for the 8v runners here.

It's worth remembering that US & European VW motors can be pretty different. I was reminded of the differences between US and European 16v motors recently whilst reading Greg Raven's Watercooled VW Performance Handbook...
Mk2 Golf GTI 16v's were a shortblock 2.0 stateside, though the book does not go into detail such as engine code - though I suspect it wasn't a 9A like we got in other (later) models over here... Tallblock motors (such as the AGG 2.0 8v and ABF 2.0 16v) were used in mk3 Golfs in the US as they were over here.
From what I read, the only VW of that period sold in the US with a 1.8 16v was the mk2 Scirocco GTX 16v - compare that with here where the 1.8 16v with K-Jet injection seemed to go in just about every model VW produced at the time (not the Polo but just about everything else!).
Anyway, i'll take off my duffel coat and stop rambling...
wasnt the 3A a 2L short block used in the older audis???

Are you sure the ABF was usd state-side, all the US form stuff I've read says ABF was Euro only:confused: That was from USA posters too because many asked what an ABF even was.

VWOA did'nt make 16v turbo.... but a few other made kits...
http://8vturbo.com for more info and manifolds.

As for a Turbo Technics exhaust manifold... rare as hens teeth.. ;) but I have a brand new spangley one... :D
Made to fit T25 turbo... Have adaptor plate made for T3 and T3 turbo also... (another project I never got round to doing!)
Good results can be had from the motor... but other mods will be required like cropping CR, mapping it, intercooling... plumbing etc...
Helps if you pretty handy at this sort of work? else it's ker-ching $$$

Sorry, I should have been clearer - I meant tall block 2.0 motors were used in mk3 Golfs in the US. I mentioned AGG and ABF as they are a couple of the tall block motors that we here are most familiar with, not necessarily that these were the tall block motors used in US spec mk3 Golfs.
Maybe I should start compiling a list of things I need to go delving about in ETKA to look up over the weekend...
