Ive been driving them for 7 years...my wife's had a couple since 1997...
not as quick as my Leon Cupra but once on the move it is just as much if not more fun to drive.
Good fuel consumption too...
haven't modded mine though...
more significant they are very strong in a crash.
I think he means the new shape 2.0 sport. I drove one not long ago and it was ok but not as quick as the mk2 2.0 8v. It's a heavier car tho so is expected.
Despite the same 115BHP claims it has the later crossflow engine which I believe is easier to tune, although it didn't have as much low down punch as my mk2 8v. It drove more like a 16v, and the engine sounded really nasty.
They looks quite good value though as you get nearly all the same toys as in a TDi 130 along with the same wheels etc. My dealer had them for under £10k I think.
IIRC its a very old engine design, so emissions and economy isnt great. the 2l replaces the 1.4 16v 100bhp model, which i think makes more sense... its more economical, reliable, lighter and more enviromentally friendly so you wont get shafted for car tax.
If it was my money i would either try to get a MY03 1.4 16v 100bhp sport or a TDI130 :)

I quite like the old 2.0 8v engines myself; it's surprising how quickly you can hustle one along on the torque if you drive them properly and you don't have to thrash it like a poxy 16valver.
It's not a racer though and any thoughts of getting more power out of an exhaust are a waste of energy. You may as well just saw the end off the existing pipe and put on a good quality tailpipe trim.
You could get about 5-10bhp from a re-map or if you've got a couple of grand to spare a supercharger is availible.
If you want a fast mk4 though it's the TDI really.
Not saying the 2.0 isn't a good car though and it's a lighter engine than the TDI so handling should be a bit nicer.
poxy 16 valver
can open,worms everywhere.
horses for courses,wanna drive miss diasy?get an 8v,wanna get somewhere quickly,get a 16v:p :p ;)
The 8v mk4 I drove was nowhere near as lazy as my mk2. Either it needed to loosen up, or the crossflow head makes a difference and is no longer so much like the 'classic' 8v engine that we all know (and love)

Would you like to tell all the nice people about our convoy down the twisties from Castle Combe down to Thruxton last summer Jason?
Crossflow 8v should be quite a tunable engine - i've heard of some fairly impressive results from tuning the things, esp from the US. That's all getting a bit more involved though and in terms of off the shelf bolt on goodies for a mk4 Ibiza, I don't really know of anything. And bear in mind that it's always going to cost far more to squeeze power out of a n/a motor than with forced induction (either petrol or diesel)...
Neo_VR - the top end of the motor is hardly old - AFAIK it dates back to the late 90's, being used in mk4 Golfs, new Beetles, etc. (though it may have been used in Audi's before that). Note that that's about the same time we started seeing the (/TongueInCheekOn) positively ancient (/TongueInCheekOff) 1.8 20vT...

Just MHO, but - forget the 2.0 8v - get the TDI 130 - more power, lots more torque, far better fuel economy, 170-180bhp easily obtainable, gp7 insurance.
But I am biased :D

ok.
glyn nearly killed a motorcyclist, going like a loony,he then proceeded to drive passed thruxton circuit(signs clearly visible)for about 15 miles.
thats about it i think G,i would of course like to point out that the safety of my passenger was paramount,i didn't know where i was going so coming passed would have been futile.road racing is neither big or clever glyn;) :p :D

By poxy 16v I meant the small capacity 1.4 engine in a bloody heavy car (which the new Ibiza is).
If you check my sig I have a 16v and balls out it is quick but in everyday driving it ain't really any quicker than an 8v, I've spent years owning both and prefer 8v's personally.
Big fan of the Lupo GTI though, that's what a 16v engine should be like.

I was meaning more that out of most of the corners I was pulling out quite a gap and you appeared to be finding it a little difficult to keep up at times - and it's not like I was really on one. Mind you, a passenger, stoopidly big tent and extra bodywork has gotta be worth 35bhp, eh? ;) Oh, and that tw@t on the bike should keep on his own side of the road - it's not like I crossed the white line...

Given that I overshot Thruxton, do you think I did?

ok i'll try a bit next time;)
I'm getting bad vibes from this thread so far. Anything positive about this car? My local dealer has one i'm interested in. July 03, 5k miles, £9995. Which is probably the limit of my budget. It's got the same, if not more equipment than my Clio Si 1.4 and better performance, which were the 2 main criteria i was looking for. Plus i can get very good insurance on it.
Go and have a drive yourself and see what you think.
I did not think it was bad myself.
