What would the maximum bhp my ibiza cupra could run from standard internals? 250/300 bhp?? dont wanna start changing pistons etc.not for a while anyway.
any ideas??

Seems to be lots of 1.8T's running well over 300BHP with stock internals and no problems. Personally I wouldn't like to go beyond 300BHP but Bills Ibiza runs 340BHP+ on stock internals (I think).

std 1 bar IHI ran 325bhp on stock internals...
Not big boost... less than some rechips...

Seems pretty strong to me.
15K miles on IHI now. (seriously ragged)

I had a chat about this with Mike at Jabba, and he said the weakest component is the rods and they are good for about 320lb/ft. If you go higher than this then you would need new rods, but you'd need new or machined pistons to lower the compression ratio to prevent detonation by this point anyway, plus the Ibiza gearbox will only take 320lb/ft with a Quaife diff (290lb/ft without).

Some of these details are on Jabbas website.

Ben,

didn't you say you saw signs of significant wear on the diff rivets when you had your quaife fitted?

I presume with your current set up torque is something like 240lbs ft?

Makes me wonder if the gearbox can really handle a prolonged 290lbs ft without a quaife...

My Oettinger chip is rated at ONLY 207lb/ft and yes the diff rivets were wearing. This leads me to believe that the diff rivets are going to be a problem for all tuned Ibizas eventually, regardless of whether its just chipped or the turbo upgraded.

You can get the diff rivets replaced for the much much much stronger ARP fasteners without changing over to a Quaife diff.

But yes, I think you would be unwise to go for any turbo upgrade without some kind of work on the gearbox.

Shock loadings don't help - and with many aftermarket chips providing maps with whopping boost spikes, I doubt this will help diff rivet life.

It's worth noting that VW have used rivets for years - amongst others, they can be found in 020's, 02A's, 02J's and probably most others too - not sure about 02M, but hey, why change the habit of a lifetime - so that's probably the vast majority of transverse front engined FWD VAG product over the years. And yes, they've given problems for years too...

The bolt set is also a VAG dealer kit also... such is the failure rate... but they STILL fit rivets in from new !!!
DUH?

320lbft killed 2nd gear. No teeth left on it

So is the 6-speed Leon 'box any stronger then?

I was gonna say that about the bolt set. The fact that VW themselves make an uprated bolt set implies that they awknowledge the weakness of the rivets.... so why don't they use the bolts as standard?

So, Jabbas statement about the strength of the box is pretty spot on then... ie. it will break at 320lb/ft. ;)

The info has been on their website since they relaunched it, well before yours went pop. 290lb/ft will break it without a Quaife, and 320lb/ft will break it with a Quaife, or 400lb/ft with the Quaife gear set.

Cheers

what about maximum bhp from standard internals for the 1.8 turbo\leon 180 hp? And what exactly are the mods to take it there?
