hello everybody, new to the site it seems great loads of information and stuff looks like it will be very helpfull.

Possibley looking into getting a mk1 leon cupra r in the near future. Usually into my renaults so hopefully wont be dissapointed if i do.

What are they like for handling standard? Do the go where you put the and stay or do they suffer from bad understeer etc?

Also how would a standard cupra r face up to say a standard s3 quattro?

Hi Tom where are you from? As an out of the box car they handle great even for a heavy hatchback, not too different to the likes the Civic Type R etc. Obviously you can't compare them to the Focus RS or Megane R26R as they have LSDs and track focussed suspension.

Standing start, S3 would have the edge as it's 4wd but from a rolling start the LCR would have the legs as it's lighter and has less transmission loss. There's a solid community between us LCR guys and the S3 guys, we swap a lot of parts over from our engines and tuning is identical. The R32 guys aren't so friendly but a remapped LCR normally shuts them up ;).

Hi Tom,

Get an LCR, you won't regret it :) Think Jay ^^ has covered the fundamentals. Tonnes of info and helpful advice to tune an LCR well on this forum...

I like you was after either an LCR, S3 Quattro 02-53'ish plate, or the MK4 R32 Golf. Went for the LCR as Leon's are alot less common and looks so much meaner than the other 2. But also tuning potential is cheaper than supercharging an R32 for example. You can't remap them to 280bhp in a flash. S3's just didn't look the part for me and are looking a bit tired now. But still a great car no doubt.

If you get an LCR and remap it, you will be shocked at the torque! 280+bhp and 300+ lb/ft torque easily achievable with the right mods and a decent remap to suit. Check Jay's or mine as an example of what you can do ;)

cheers for you replys guys. what is the weight difference in the two cars? if much? Agree on the s3 looking a bit old now.

How much roughly would you be talking to get the car from standard to the power figures you quoted?

Also what is youre mpg like? Thanks

Not sure on the weight difference, but S3/LCR must be similar, but heavier must be the R32... I test drove one and it felt like a tank. Very smooth drive though. Nice car still!

Well to get 280+bhp you need to have a stage 2 remap. For that you need a full turbo back exhaust with sports cat (upto about £1000) you also need uprated DV (£90) uprated turbo intake pipe (TIP) £150-200, plus a bigger air filter like a Jetex £60 odd, and if you want the best out of it, a front mount intercooler (FMIC) upto £600 for LCR if you get a Forge etc.

The remap will cost around £500 too.

MPG wise, mine is better since it's been mapped, I see about 35mpg on the motorway and around town anything from 20 upto 27/28 depending on how heavy the traffic is. It's basically about trying to drive 'off-turbo' around town to conserve the mpg, but using the turbo when it opens up :)

The weight difference between LCR & S3 is about 100kg due to the 4WD system, & leather seats, subwoofer etc in the S3.

No, not LCRs came with leather but some came with Recaro's which were very nice. It's not such a bad thing not having leather re: the weight saving. If you really really did want it though, the S3 seats are a direct swap into the LCR. I'm not sure if R32 seats are leather but they fit also.

cheers 4 ya help lads. Say i was to eventually swap the seas for leathers from say the s3 would the airbags still work? The recaros that come in the r look nice they would just be even nicer if they were leather, cheers

Yup, the air bags would still work. If the connectors under the seat aren't the same all you need to do is swap the connectors over for S3 ones (car loom & seat loom).

hi again all. we are definatley looking at getting a cupra r the missus doesnt like the cupra bumper lol.

what should i look out for when getting one? also how do i tell if its a 225? is it by the engine code? if so how and where do i find this?

we are looking to getting one from a dealer as we would ideally like to p/x are current car, so if anybody knows of any good ones knocking about?

225 were from 2003 (53 reg) onwards, they came with a BAM engine and the steering wheels have a red strip at the top.

That's about it, everything else was the same. 210 & 225 only differ in power due to an ECU tweak which is hardly felt on the road if at all, car reviews suggest that the 225 felt more responsive on the power but not that I ever noticed. Both remap to the same figures so unless you're bothered about the steering wheel then it doesn't matter which one you get.

Sticker in the boot under the carpet. Should be on the left hand side.

AMK & BAM are LCR, anything else is probably a Cupra with a Cupra R bodykit.

cheers again. do the cars have cruise control? also can the sat nav surround be brought so thatif i got one without it i could fit say a double din head unit there? also do they come with cruise control?

we looked at a cupra r yesterday in black, really liked it. it was the 210 model so hopefully will have it next weekend! hope there isnt to much of a noticable difference to the 225, as ive read its only 10bhp difference and not that noticable.

anything else i should be looking out for with the car? cheers

gutted i am the girl has only gone and sold the leon last night! When we said wed be back at the weekend to get it! Anybody brought a leon from near dover way? If so i wana cut ya nuts off lol. Back on the hunt!

picked up a black lcr last night, think its awesome. it has a miltek cat back, air filter not sure if its k&n or a cheap one yet. also been remapped by jabba. have a print out for about 270 bhp not sure if the printout looks real though lol. and it says about 270bhp does this sound a bit far fetched with the mods done?

Also got a k2 spec gear nob. Has had the steering wheel replaced with which i think is a cupra one which has been re stiched with red piping as the old wheel had faded.

Should i be able to hear the turbo spin up when the car is out of gear which a little bit of throttle? As i can im thinking this is because of the air filter?

The car has a blemish on the roof where a bird has kindly shat lol, only the lacquer has cracked a bit is there anyway i can repair this without a full respray?

Also has might look into buying a machine polisher. Any recomendations? Thanks

Congrats!

270bhp sounds about right, each dyno will produce different figures though. If you have a turbo-back exhaust then 270bhp is more likely, if just a cat-back then perhaps a little less. If you're worried about it then go and get it on a rolling road but as I have no idea where you are located I can't recommend you a tuner nearby that has one.

Steering wheel refurb is good, they all fade.

The turbo on this car is quite loud, whistles more than most even when out of gear. As long as it's not screeching or smoking then it's healthy, just make sure you take car of it (oil changes, warm up & cool down).

Best bet for the laquer damage is a mobile SMART repairer.
