View Full Version : Oil Loss?
I do about 1200 miles each months in my 1.8T Ibiza, and every 2-3 months, I seem to have to put about 1 litre of oil in to keep it topped up. Is this normal. The car has done 46000, and it's not leaking any, and there's no nasty blue smoke either.
If anyone knows, I'd appreciate it.

:(
sounds acceptable oil burning off to me - perhaps a little high
do you rag it from cold?
Hi mate,
I try my best not to cause I'm aware of the damage that can be caused. The last oil change I did, I treated it to some Slick 50, and then some Mobil 1. I was just concerned about where this oil was going. So is it just blowby past the rings or what?
most likely seeping yes, or thru the turbo seals a bit.
good that you check it - I know of a few people that didn't to their peril.
the more revs you give it the higher the consumption will be.
that said - well worth a look next time you're under the car to ensure there is no leakage from the turbo to sump oil pipes
Mark
Thanks Mark,
As long as this consumption is normal, I'm happy with that. Feared the worst. The bloke I bought it off worked for ProDrive, and I think it's first 30000 miles probably weren't it's easiest.
Didn't want any major overhauling to do. Out of interest, have you heard of any major mechanical failing with the 1.8T lump?
Well, if you cannot see (blue smoke) and smell oil burning in the exhaust then it may be OK.

Not below 300 BHP :)
i've never changed or topped up the oil before... i have a 1.4, does anyone know when i should top it up? and what with..
thanks
I'd check your handbook, but I expect 10W40 grade will be fine for that engine, but on account of your NOS kit, I'd find a good fully synthetic oil. Put something nice in though, don't put crap oil in cause it doesn't pay. Your 1.4 shouldn't use any oil anyway, not unless it spends it's life at 6000 rpm. If I were you, when your mileage gets to about 40000, I'd put some additive in too like Slick 50. There are others on the market.
:)
cool cheers. it spends its life at 5,500rpm. i always redline it  i'm gonna stop though, cos petrol is going too fast!
