Hi

Will be doing an oil change soon, trying to do them every 5-6K. Whats your advice for the viscosity of oil for a 1.4 8v 97 47,000 miles.

Looking in the haynes manual they are talking about:

10W/40 , 15W/40 , 15W/50 OR 20W/50

Would like to use Mobil, although not sure whether they have a suitable grade.

Would I be right in thinking that using the wrong grade of oil will affect, performance, fuel consumption and engine life. Would 10W/40 be the best one to go for?

Cheers

well, any of the above viscosity's will do the job really, its not going to have a detrimental affect whatever you use that the manufactures or the haynes manual suggests as the engine is designed to run on various grades of oil, although dont use cheap lesser known brands, stick to the estabilished makes such as castrol or mobile etc.

in a nutshell this what the numbers mean in multi grade oils=

SAE= Society of Automotive Engineers

10W= the ability of the oil to flow or its thickness, 5W being thinner and 20W being thicker

/40= the oils ability to withstand resistance being squezed out of moving parts to lubricate them; bearings, journals, camshafts etc.

I would go for the 10W/40. That's the "best" i would put into a 8v.

Thanks for the advice would mobil 0w/40 be too thin to use?
Failing Mobil is it Synta Gold that Seat/VW dealers use.

Personally I'd go for Castrol Magnatec or a good alround Oil with an additive like ZX-1

mcmail- Iam currently using ZX1 I am using it in the engine and gearbox. Definately much smoother performance!

Yeah I've used this in the passed on my MkII Golf GTI, really made a difference.

Hey all,

I have heard nothing but good things about Mobil1, the only bad thing being not to use it to early as it will not allow the engine to wear itself in enough. In fact I heard of a guy who had built a plane, you have to wear the engine in first to a set level. He used Mobil1, ran it for the allotted number of hours and found that it hadn't even started to wear. He had to drain the oil, replace with lesser spec and repeat the time......

So, sounds good - only Q is...it is suitable for a 1.8T and if so...after how many miles is it recommended to be used???

Cheers - Rich

Mobil 1 is a great oil. It is very thin though, and can cause some engines to rattle more than they would otherwise. It did'nt suit my 16v engine for instance. Available in some different grades, 0W50, 5W40,5W50 from memory.

I am not using Mobil 1 in my Ibiza yet. Waiting to get 10,000 miles on it first. 1st oild change done at just over 5K miles and Castrol Magnatex was used as refill.

Spoke to parts man @ Renny's in Tonbridge he reckoned Synta Gold 5w/40 FS. I asked him about Mobil 0w/40 and he said it would be better to go with Synta Gold.

Perhaps Flapper could enlighten us on what grades they put in different engines.

That would **** the engine IMHO, it is used on hitech sophisticated engines and high performance engines

yep the oil dampens the noise inside the engine funilly enough

Went into Halfords today looked at their oil recommendation for ibiza 1.4 and saw that they recommended a 15w/50 oil which I noticed Mobil 1 was in.

Would this be ok?

More than that......... it made the hydraulic followers rattle and tick.

Conversly it worked a treat in my Renault 11 turbo, and I swear Mobil One was the only thing keeping that engine together.... 18psi boost with the odd 22psi binge!!!

I've been meaning to say, since owning the car I've never had the "sounds like a diesel on startup" characteristic on my car. Since my 10k service it's started doing it every now and again.

Bill when you are reffering to Mobil 1 as a very thin oil, are u talking about their 0w/40?.

If so surely a 15w/50 would be fine to use?

cheers

I would hope a mobil 1 in 15W50 would be Ok, but I have never seen it for sale. (does'nt mean it is'nt available, but it is'nt stocked in any shops I frequent)

I'm also using ZX1 additive and can highly reccomend it, also use it the petrol. Much much smoother !

www.zx1.com

Use Mobil 1 in my engine

I also used ZX1 in the petrol but me Golf GTI hated that, engine wouldn't idle correctly etc! I stopped using it in the petrol after that and just used it as an Oil additive. it does work really well though!

so where do we get ZX1 fom then? - anything to make my 8V smoother

either from http://www.zx1store.co.uk/

or afaik QVC sell it... yeah they do

go to www.qvcuk.com and do a seach for ZX1

afaik you need the 250ml bottle for anything upto 3.5 litre engine

Just taken a quick look at the zx1 website and it states that you put ZX-1 in the petrol for two cycle engines(by which I think they mean two-stroke), so should you be putting it in your 4 stroke engine?

I never thought I'd say this but QVC looks the cheaper option!!

Individual price = 15 + 15 + 4.50 = 34.50

QVC package = 23.63 + 3.95 = 27.58 !!

So whats the sumary - 5w/40 or 10w/40 + ZX1

Is this for 16v/8v or both?

Rapido

I went for the QVC option, and in the end 5w/40 synta Gold from VW dealer £18 trade.

Running well!

...The koni's are on their way

I used to know a guy who ran his car on cooking oil, he changed it every week ( he wasn't paying for it) What you need to consider is how hard you drive your car. All oil is good, (hopefully) If you do a track day you need to change the oil imedialtely. I have read several scientific studies on the difference between synthetic and mineral oils, basically they provide the same lubrication but synthetic can provide more protection against molecular break down under high temperature loads, (i,e, Turbo temps), What buggers oil the most is temperature, and a turbo under load provides more than enough of that. I ran a modded cossie (15K of mods) on magnatec with no problems, only cos I was to tight to spend the money on Castrol R (that amazing smell, mmm) but changed it every 4K. I recomend genaral VW synthetic oil on 4K changes. (35 squid oil and filter change ) DO avoid additives though, search the web and you will hear nough horrer stories to put you off them.

Have heard nothing but praise for ZX1.

I also use it and can't reccomend it enough. Engine runs much smoother and slightly better mpg. Also add it to the petrol for upper cylinder lubricant every now and then.

Excellent stuff, give it a try !

The uk web-site is better http://www.team-zx1.co.uk/
