Was going past my local Honda dealer earlier on and saw they had a nice shiny Civic Type R parked outside so thought I'd pop in and see what all the hype was about.

Fortunately I was in a borrowed company vehicle and not my "Y" plate Leon Cupra or they might have smelt a rat.... Sales guy couldn't have been nicer and gave me the keys there and then....SEAT dealer's take note!!! Took it out for a blat and was quite impressed apart from the interior which was typical plasticy Honda sh*te. Worst point was the gear lever sticking out of the dash... what were they thinking about with that one. Think the design guys had been down the pub the night before they dreemed that one up for a laugh.... http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/biggrin.gif It's totally different from the Accord Type R I test drove before I got the Leon which needed the nuts thrashing off it to get moving and the Civic felt genuinely quick no matter what gear or speed you were doing. Hasn't got anywhere near the low down poke of the Leon so still needs a few revs to really get going but boy when you do, does it go.... Wouldn't p/x my Leon for one... Not in the same league quality wise.... not for me.

which honda dealer is that? is it the one in poole (cant remember the name?!)

your experiences of the engine sound better than i was expecting, i thought it would be REALLY top-endy as per all other V-TEcs, so that is reassuring at least. main problem i have with it is the looks, although like you i'm not too keen on that weird gear lever thing. 6 speed is good though, as are the seats i'm sure...

I thought the whole idea of the V-TEC was so that it's not all top end or all bottom end, but the best of both worlds.

hmmmm, you've obviously never driven an Accord Type R then have you???? They need wringing to within an ounce of their lives to get any sort of decent progress out of them.

Si, the dealer was Horizon. http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/tongue.gif

Eh Max? I don't get it! You don't get much better build quality/engineering than Honda.
Doesn't your Mrs drive a Clio 172? Now would you swap the Clio for a Type R?

Didn't say it didn't feel well built. Just typical jap crap. The plastics are appalling compared to the Leon and that silver bit on the centre console looks like it came off a seventies music centre.

The misses's Clio is a company car so not much chance of p'exing there!!!! Its also tacky inside but goes like sh*te off a shovel. Very little to chose between the Clio and Honda on performance. Clio has more low down grunt but doesn't seem to loose out at the top end either.

That's the whole idea of the new and improved i-VTEC, not the original VTEC system first introduced way back in 1989.

My old Civic VTi and CRX VT both needed to be driven as if you had stolen them - the change in performance (and noise) as the second cam lobes swapped in at around 5500 rpm was very noticeable (as it is in the Accord Type R).

i-VTEC (as in the new Civics) produce much more low down torque - the cam change over is supposed to be far less noticeable.

well, i'd be quite keen on either the Type R or the 172...i'm test driving the 172 tomorrow for a possible buy in LONG term future, and will compare Type R with it. Be interested to see what the new i-vtec is like as i'm not a big one for revving like buggery! maybe the 172 would suit my driving style better...?

Had a ride in preproduction Type R No.7 on Friday, but they wouldn't let me drive it http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/frown.gif
Plenty of poke low down, good brakes http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/biggrin.gif, comfortable and I liked the looks of it a lot (it was black). Looks very different to the 5 door model...
If I can get hold of an import for £12-13K I'm gonna have one - reckon it'll be more fun than the Leon and still very spacious http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/tongue.gif

hey 20VT!

good to hear you had a go in the type-r - and good to hear you liked it! another chap on here had a go in one round my way, and he said he was very impressed to. my girlf and i went out in the 172 yesterday, here's my thoughts...

1. Engine tight, but fast renaults always are till well into 5 figure mileages, this only had 880 on. but pretty pokey, fast at higher revs. good engine, gearbox nice, little rubbery, but i like that, cluth heavy and nice, sterring nice although wheel too big! nice wheel though...
2. seat excellent, dirving position not so good
3. handling superb! couldn't fault it, lightyears ahead of SEATs as expected
4. looks - not too bad in the metallic black test car. im not a big fan of the new front, but doesn't actually look so bad in the flesh

so, i'll be having one, maybe mid 2002, more than likely through jamjar.com as they were cheap, (few hundred quid less possible than what they say online) plus very low deposit.

NJoi fella!
