hey all, i have had an Ibiza Cupra Sport GTi16v for the last 3 months or so, and i have kinda decided to get a pod filter/cold air induction kit installed, though i have encountered some problems.
On the K&N sight it lists kits for almost every ibiza varient but specifically says "does not include Cupra Sport model" on the ones relevant to my engine. Here is a copy of the table from the site:
IBIZA 57i Kits:
CUPRA 1.8 20v Turbo 156bhp
Oct 00>
1.9 TDi 130bhp 1999>
2.0 GTi 8v SOHC 1993-97
(NOT Cupra Sport models
2.0 GTi 8v Cupra Sport 1997-99
2.0 16v DOHC 1996>
(NOT Cupra Sport models)
2.0 GTi 16v DOHC 1996>
(NOT Cupra Sport models)
Does anybody know why there are no avalable kits for my car? Is there some problem with the intake tract or the airflow sensor that prevents a filter being put in? Thanks alot for your help...

I noticed that myself a little while ago... i've purchased stuff through Demon Tweeks - UK in the past, and they're listing is the same for 57i kits. I put a K&N panel filter on mine from Revolution Racegear here in Tasmania, and a 57i kit is on my shopping list. I'll keep my eye on this thread too.
p.s : I hope you're enjoying your car, it's nice to drive something a bit different here in Aus isn't it...

Ok, been doing some minor research....
The GTi16V Cupra Sport's intake system is somewhat of a complex one....as well as the obvious connection to the intake manifold, it consists of:
*resonator box/silencer
*cold air intake running from right headlamp to airbox
*Thick pipe seeming to run from underside of airbox to exhaust manifold#
*thin pipe running from side of box to what looks like an injector at front of intake manifold
*MAF sensor
*Air temp sensor (location unknown)
# this i hear operates off a vacume valve, its supposed to vent hot air into the airbox from the exhaust manifold in the event of the airbox freezing up in cold weather.
I assume this is why there have been no induction kits for the GTi16V Cupra Sport so far.
Now most of this stuff im quite sure its ok to rip out and say goodby to, keeping in mind to relocate the MAF sensor appropriatley. But what i cant get my mind around is that bloody thin cable that runs to the front of the intake manifold. It seems to connect upto a cylindrical decive roughly the size of a C cell battery, which in turn connects up to a few wires that run off to god knows where.
anyway, comments about anything that might help would be appriciated.
That's wierd I got an induction kit with my new cupra (K&N) and the kit works fine (fitted it last night) and the instructions cover all the connections covered in your post.
Have a look at KandNfilters.co.uk and they have online fitting instructions for each kit. The mk3 golf gti 16v seems to have the most in depth ones and basically has the same connections as the ibiza
You could try Pipercross, although you will probably see similar (or even better) gains from fitting a panel filter and modding the air box. You can still remove the regulator box thing and then stuff a big intake pipe into the bottom of the box - there is a guide on the main site.
Induction kits can sometimes do more harm than good as they suck in a lot of hot air from the engine bay.

so your saying to get the kit for the MkIII Golf GTi16v???
I heard they had the same engine, (engine code ABF i think), but it never really crossed my mind untill now. When i saw that all the "Cupra Sport" versions were not compadible with the avalable kit on the K&N site i kinda lost hope then and there.
I'm still having trouble navigating the site, and their database is very patchy in terms of what information it has on engine types for various modles.
could you please give the product code of the kit you fitted, ie 57-XXXXXX or something. (57-0143-1 is my best guess so far).
thanks alot

thanks alot for helping...
yeah i had kinda figured that the 57i was the kit i needed, though there just didnt seem to be any specific to my car. Looking at the order form, there are hundreds of variations of the 57i so i was kinda stuck there.
by the way, is the one you have fitted the 2nd generation one with the built in heat sheild, or the original version?
swales_p
16-03-2004, 13:35
its the original version!!! ive modded it abit tho!! made me own heat shield (looks cool) + am getting vents into the wing to allow for more cold air in!
You get a cold air feeder with the inducation kit, this fits below the front lower bumper spoiler and runs up the back of the bumper - pointing at the K&N therefore blasting it with cold air as you drive along!!!
Im onto modding this now 2 with the hope of somehow fitting a sheet around the cone, fitting it to the cold air feed. I'll let you know how it goes - this basically meand the vents will be for show but theyl look sweeeeet!!!

nice, so the blitz just fits into the K&N setup perfectly??
I think word out is that the HKS foam-type mushroom filters are the best there are... but they are pretty expensive. They also look kinda ordinary.....
Thanks everyone for helping

Im a wee bit confused!!!!
When looking at my new Fast Car mag :hide: ive noticed that a K&N induction kit for the 16v Cupra Sport comes under 57-0374!HOWEVER!!! the one ive bought comes under 57-0254 this is the 2.0l 16v gti!!! and fitted perfectly!!! what the....
Is there any difference between the engine in the gti and cupra sport?
Also - the fitting instructions for my filter specifically say its for the 2.0l 16v 150BHP engine!!! ohh my word!!!
Why is it always a pain in the arse when buying for the Mk2 cupra sport model, they never seem to have it listed in the product ranges BUT finially appears months down the line!! grrrrrrrrrrrrr................. :thumbd:

well, this is what i managed to dig up:
K&N Applications for 57-0374
1999 SEAT IBIZA CUPRA SPORT 2.0L - 8v (not available in the USA)
1998 SEAT IBIZA CUPRA SPORT 2.0L L4 F/I - 8v (not available in the USA)
1997 SEAT IBIZA CUPRA SPORT 2.0L F/I - 8v (not available in the USA)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
K&N Applications for 57-0254
1998 SEAT IBIZA 2.0L - 150BHP, GTI, 16v, DOHC (not available in the USA)
1997 SEAT IBIZA 2.0L - 150BHP, GTI, 16v, DOHC (not available in the USA)
1996 SEAT IBIZA 2.0L - 150BHP, 16v, DOHC (not available in the USA)
It seems that 57-0254, the one you have in your car best fits the engine descriptions... but i was under the impression that there were no 'Non cupra' 150BHP engines for the ibiza.
To my best knowlage, K&N have bodged up their data base and have no idea what seat is which. Or maybe its Seats fault for not seting up a logical model hierarchy. Either way, we seem to be at the bottom of the problem now.
Moving on.... has anybody with an induction kit noticed any power/throttle responce gains so far?
swales_p
18-03-2004, 13:44
i havnt got any figures to show but at lower revs my car is way more responsive!! not that much different at high revs!!! Oh and it makes the exhaust sound sweeeeeeeeet
The mod which i noticed the most power gains was that of the full cat back system (magnex!!) id defo advise any1 to get a better exhaust!!! not a Magnex 1 tho! they make the car rattle like hell!!!!! :thumbd:

Yeah my car already has a exhaust from the previous owner.... not sure what it is, could very well be a custom job, I've never seen one like it before on any site. (the tip is circular, about the diameter of a coke can, and comes out horizontal but bends to point down on a -45 degree angle at the tip.
Sounds really good... but that could just be the engine. Especially at low revs, say 1,500-2,000, when you suddenly give it full throttle it gives out this nice pulsy throb, which fades away as revs rise. The system might also include a high flow cat but i really cant say, i would have to contact to owner to find out. The exhaust also makes a notable throb at idol, which sounds cool but gets annoying caus it always wakes people up when i reverse into my driveway at 3:00am. Oh well... their loss! :bleh:
Is this typical of the stock GTi16v exhuast / generic aftermarket exhaust kits?

Doh! I just ordered a K&N replacement filter panle, and now you tell me a 57i kit is available! DOH! oh well, I huess Autobarn can just change the order.....fingers crossed! hisashiburi, if you've got the kit and installed it, would love to know where you got it, how much it cost, and how much difference it makes!
