View Full Version : Higer octane.... :)
Hey All,
With all this talk of Shell Optimax being ~99Ron I gotta thinking...
Is there any reason why our Cupras cannot run on 100RON Avgas??? It's a LOT cheaper than fuel from a car garage at around 65 to 70 pence per litre.
Cheers - Rich

Getting someone to supply you might be an issue as it would be going into a car not a plane.
If you have someone who will supply you ???

If you want to know where to get this 99RON fuel, click on this link, http://www.shell.com/uk-en/content/0,4011,44848-69539,00.html
This isnt a definitive list as it isnt updated too often, so check your local shell stations or even pop in and ask them when they are getting it!!

Yeah the fuel is calle OptiMax, its actually 98 RON according to shells info.
I've just filled up with a tank, on the way home from Trax this evening, and wowee its potent stuff http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/biggrin.gif http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/biggrin.gif
The Leon was truly flying tonight up the M6.

Chips are nicer in Engines than with Fish.
I got it slightly wrong, the quote from shell's web site says :-
What is the Octane level of Shell Optimax?
Shell Optimax has the highest octane specification of any petrol in the UK. It is greater than 98 Research Octane Number (RON).
Any i assumed it was 99 because it says greater than 98 !!, even shell dont seem to know exactly what octane it is http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/wink.gif
I have noticed that my engine is a fair bit noisier under full accelleration though

I have a ready supply (parent own an airfield)...just worried about melting cats, exhaust valve seats, etc, etc... Anyone nkow who I can ask to fnid out - tried RSD but no mail yet!

Hey there,
If you buy avgas commercially from any airfield (ie, you're not a family member) then it is around £1 a litre...not so attractive eh! But then it is 100RON and a far higher quality than carr petrol (less water per colume, etc).

Can you still add Octaine Booster? RedX stuff, if so do you have to add it per the instructions, or can you chuck the whole bottle in on a tenners worth?

Well seeing as us poor Hampshire residents aren't allowed to have Optimax,
i trecked all the way to Manchester to buy some of my own (actually that's
a lie, but i was in Manc this weekend and so made a special effort to visit
a station that stocked it...)
anyway, my thoughts are that it seemed a good fuel, not a big difference
that maybe i was expecting, and certainly not the equivalent difference
as UL97 compared to UL95. maybe it's because the stock 156bhp engine is
not running so hard as the 180bhp version, but it wasn't a 'flying' difference
some of the Leon guys reported. I paid 80.9p in Bolton compared to 82.9p
for UL97 from my BP station in Hampshire. Was OK, but i'd not pay a premium
for it over UL97 based upon this tank. Maybe engine was already clean (engine
only ever run on UL97) or maybe it was dirty and the Optimax was still
cleaning on this tank?! I dunno...good but not ground breaking for 156bhp owners...

I wouldn't put AVGAS in a car...don't forget, AVGAS is closer to diesel than gasoline in terms of material boiling point, sulphur, aromatics etc. It is higher octane becasue it has more aromatic molecules in it, which also lead to more coking aswell...i doubt there's also much in the way of additives in it etc...in my opinion, RSD's recommendations are unlikely to say the least...

Tend to agree with Si,
filled up yesterday - actually think car performed better with Shell super UL, however may have something to do with reasons already outlined by Si,
may need time to work - cheaper than old SUL at 79.9 though so can't complain too much !

My Cordie sx is performing about 1-1,5 mpg better with Super Ul, More torque but got similar improvements with a K&N filter (180 BHP - 2.0 16v),
My Dad had a Saab 9000s - turbo many year ago (about 10) and they reconed it was worth about 10 bhp.
The problem i have is he has had a T5 since then (It rocks -seriously - no way you can live with it) and wants to tune it. God help us all!

KJF - ahhh Wigan lad! i was up your way this weekend, got the optimax in Bolton...
yeah, fuel was OK but not ground breaking like diff between UL95 and UL97. i use BP UL97 as the station is near my workplace, but i actually think it is one of the best super's around. no real logical reason why though...

I filled up with a duff tank of Optimax today, doesnt seem any better than super unleaded today,
I wonder if some of the garages are mixing it down to make more profit?, because i have had really good results with optimax over the last few weeks

Guys
I'm now onto my 2nd tank of Optimax, and i have to say i think it is a lot better than the first! I'd always run my car on UL97, and with the first tank i didn't notice much (if any) difference with the Optimax, But the second tank is certainly sharper...maybe my first one was jsut a bit duff????

Got it mate, cheers for the heads up. The one on Lansdown Road has it as well and the Cross Hands at Hucclecote on the way to Stroud if you're interested Bill? Seems like they did them all overnight.
First impressions, yippee! I run mine on UL97 as well as Si and defintely noticed it. Below the turbo spinning up it's more responsive and when it kicks in, it feels like there's more grunt. You need to have a lighter boot than normal when accelerating. Inital MPG has gone up by one or two as well.
At 79.9 which is 3p per litre cheaper than I last paid for 97 I'm well impressed.
Oh and it should be usuable by all unleaded capable cars so Flapper, fill her up! http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif
Cheers

Hi,
since optimax is available in germany since 1 or 2 years, we had some time to test it http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif
This it what we found out:
@comedy si:
Your impression is correct. According to my tests with my former car (Peugeot 206 S16) und the experiences of a friend with an audi S3, your engine management needs about 2 full tanks to fully adjust to the higher amount of octane.
In general:
The performance increase for non aspirated engines is low, but for charged engines a small performance gain can be expected. All engines seem to run smoother and pick up revs a bit faster. Fuel consumption is lower, up to 2l per 100km.
Taking in regard the reduced fuel consumption, optimax costs about the same as 98 octane (97 in uk ?) fuel. I would recommend it for any high performance engine.
Cheers, @lex.

I'm just under the 5k mark. It's definitely starting to loosen up now.
Just been to a wedding in Banbury, have driven from Tewkesbury to there and back at about 60/70 on twisty roads and have managed to average 37mpg! That's 5 more than I've ever seen on my gauge. The computer reckons I was on target for 420 miles from the tank. I didn't think that was possible! http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/wink.gif

See, UL97 or optimax is definitely worth it! as well as getting a smoother engine which is more sharp, the increased fuel economy is really noticable. i like 'em, it's worth the extra cashola!
