View Full Version : have I made a mistake?

Just passed my test and due to major insurance restrictions I bought a brand new Beezer MY04 1.9 TDi in platinum grey metallic, however after eventually finding all the websites about Seat's I discovered everyone seems to have bought the 1.9 Sport! I got 17" alloys the other day and tomorrow a guy called Simon Coe is coming all the way up to Glasgow here to fit an Upsolute chip to my car which according to the figures he sent, will give me a jump from 100 bhp to 133 bhp and an increase in torque. I cant get insured for the Sport, so I really have to keep this car (I love it! :worship: ) so what would anyone recommend to increase the power as much as possible without causing undue stress to the engine? What is the tolerance level in bhp/torque for the 100 bhp engine I have? Seeing as Im dragging this all out now, is it possible to purchase the bodykit from the new ibiza cupra? How mean does that look? Im getting slated at work for buying a hairdressers car at the moment, though no-one will accept my challenges yet.......Thanks :D

Upsolute and simon are quite popular and well regarded around here, so you shouldn't have any probs with that

Welcome to the family !

If insurance is an issue and the TDI 100 gets you round that, then no you haven't made a mistake !

 Having said that - once you've declared your alloys AND chip to your insurers (you are going to do this aren't you?) you might find that the insurance will become dearer than a standard 130 Sport would have been...what insurance group is the TDI 100 in ?

Looking back I'm quite glad I never had a powerful car when I first passed my test, I think I would quite likely be dead by now...

And I can't say I've ever heard the Mk4 referred to as a hairdressers car before - OK when I had a Clio I got stick for that but quite rightly so I suppose !

The TDi 100 only has a group 5 insurance rating, which when compared to similar cars with regards to performance, is very generous. The fact that I've always liked the look of all of the Ibiza's from the Mk2 onwards helped also! Hey!!!! Simon has just left about 45 mins ago and it's taking some will power to get me wasting time on this computer when my car suddenly seems to have developed into an entirely different machine! The only reason why I am in here is that as I live in Scotland it's now lashing down with rain and my new found grunt is being washed away in a traction losing wheelspin........maybe in a few months the rain will ease off to allow me to discover the true benefits of my newly UPSOLUTED TDi. Going off track I'd like to thank whoever it was at the Seat dealership in Uddingston today, where I was buying the chrome air vents and gear surround, (what a bitch to fit!) who scraped along the side of my door, denting it and scraping away all my paint, then leaving without a second thought. Just hope they realise that tomorrow Im going in to review their CCTV footage which clearly covered the area where my car was parked. Only 16 days old too..... :censored:
Anyway Thanks Simon for what can only be described as an upstanding example of what customer service is all about. Cheers mate.

You say that you lowered your car 30mm....hmmm mine does seem to be resembling a monster truck at the moment with these 17's, the only concern is that I drive about 120 per day roughly with work and there is usually 2 other guys I give a lift to, so I have to balance out what looks wicked and what is practical. My heart says forget the practical side and go for looks, but my mind is cast back about 8 years to a time when a friend had a cherry bomb exhaust on his Pug 205 GTi, now for 35 bucks this sounded at least 50 mph faster than it was really going, but on a long motorway journey it could drive you insane with that incesant drone! I do want to lower the car though, the problem is I'm new to the modifying scene having just passed my test, so would I just need springs or the full set-up? Any recomendations? BTW I have just came in from the rain and the difference in power is so much more than I expected, I think the best unexpected bonus is that the car trundles along much better in 4th gear at 30 mph. Before Upsolute it kind of was struggling to maintain that spped without almost stuttering. I spoke to Seat today and they say that a Cupra kit would probably take about another year before they sell it, although they will sell the front, back, side skirts etc seperately once the car is for sale, although it will be much more expensive that way. I do ramble on a bit eh? It's just great to have found such a good web community for this car thats UK based. It took me quite a while to find it strangely enough.

I drive about 100 miles a day going to and from work. I am using the koni adjustable shocks on my car with -30mm eibach springs (supplied and fitted from STAR Performance). I am running the standard 16's at the moment. Isnt supoer low but you do still notice a difference compared to standard. Think yours would look sweet lowered 30mm on 17's. Would still be practicable for work etc.

SCNSSC? what's that then? Im guessing by the advert its the "seat cupra net sooty sports club" ?????

The garage says that all the cameras dont point at the car park........hmmmm! So that will be nearly 250 pound then!!! Oh thanks!

Its really sunk in that the car is damaged now, I never really thought it mattered that much as I was so sure I would see the guilty party......I feel like crying actually....is that pathetic? :crying:

Similar thing happened a day or two after I got my car:
http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=25505

you might want to look up chips away and/or dentdevils if either of them have a dealer near you - they might be able to help for less than a normal body shop..

djrichard
17-03-2004, 21:43
If I go to a shop other than via the dealership, would they be able to match the colour so that it would be virtually identical? Im pettrified of making a bad choice and my car is majorly two tone! Not good. I will search through the forum to find out how to remove the mirrors so that I can get them colour coded at the same time, that should no problem, I hope......!

I used Chipsaway for my car and they did a great job, but remember they are a franchise so quality of work could vary.

I also had a good chat to the Chipsaway guy while he was working on my car for about 3 hours, he said half of his work is commerical, so the dealer you take it to could use them to get it fixed.

Not bad when they pay Chipsaway £120 or someit and then in turn charge you £250+ or more!

I will contact them as soon as I can afford it, I have to pay my insurance within 3 months to be interest free, at 3275 pounds I cant afford the interest!! they are robbing me enuff as it is!!! oh the wooes of motoring. Oh and I managed to scrape one of my alloys at about 0.3 mph today as I was rubber necking, absolutely gutted!!! :thumbd: Luckily I bought 5 alloys and tyres so that my spare looked cool too, so I guess when Im painting my brake callipers red this weekend I will be putting on the spare instead! No doubt within another month I will have scraped that too, although Im gutted I did it as Ive been parking so far out that a bus could fit between me and the kerb! :hide:

Just reading this tonight I can't beileve that poor bloke is paying over 3k for his insurance I would cry if that was me. I can see why he went for the 100TDI jesus knows what it would be one the 130TDI. Is that really the best quote you can get it seems really steep to me (£360 or thereabouts for me).

i think your main error was buying a new car as you first car - everyone should start with a banger for less than £1k as there first car - you could have had so much fun thrashing it to death and saved a fortune, rather than buying a dull modern motor that has cost you a fortune (sorry to be blunt)

That insurance is a rip off..the insurance companies are ripping off young drivers..what a cartel.

At £3250 thats a third of the price of the car...are they saying that 30% of new drivers will total their cars..what bullsh1t.

glad I'm a fossil

I'll bet you have a silly excess too so you can't claim for your recent damage.

funny how the garage came up with £250...just low enough so the insurance companies wouldn't be involved and inspect it..hmmmm

djrichard
20-03-2004, 08:11
Thats 100% accurate. 3275 pounds (my pound symbol don't work!) with a 500 pound excess! I have discussed this on another thread so i won't bore you all again, but I used to live on an Island called Tiree where the 1 policeman goes to home for the night at about 5 pm  , so young boys will drive about the beach etc in old clapped out bangers (mine was a 2 litre cortina, what a silky gear change that had! :D ) and I guess its only inevitable that after a while some one complains about all these wrecks racing about etc, result was a ban for no insurance and no licence! We all thought you did'nt need that for the beach, however apparently because the public have open access to the beach it must be covered (makes sense now!) I never learnt my lesson and got caught again :hide: so i got a bigger ban cos I now also drove whilst being banned! We were only 15-16 at the time so obviously none of us had a licence. Even though Im paying for it dearly now, I have to say it really was magic fun at 16 to be racing about with about 20 other maniacs in metros, austin princess's, volkswagen derby's, mini's etc (thats the ones i can remember) Now I'm 27 next month and boy am I paying for it. Most companies would not even give me a quote, others as high as 6000 pound! So after the initial devastation I was quite pleased to get it down to 3275. Moral of story : Behave yourself!

Bland Modern Car?????

Hmmmmm Anyone else agree that it's bland to have a now 133bhp 302 Nm Torque really cool looking car (albeit with a dent now) as soon as you pass your test? When I consider the amount of Nova, Corsa, AX, 306, 205, 206's with tacky looking chunks of cheap fibreglass dripping from them that I have covered in soot, I don'y consider it bland in the slightest. Wow Im amazed at the passion thats developing for my new car, Im getting really defensive!!! LOL

Tend to agree, your first proper car should be a banger, old mini, or metro or Renault 5 or the best, Fiat Panda!! The fun you can have, imagin paying £500 for the car and about £1000 for insurance, would still leave you nearly £2000 to put fuel in it and DRIVE, as thats what its all about when you have your first car, going on mad trips up north at 3 oclock in the morining just to ctch the sunrise in the mountains, down to france if you dare.

I really think thats crazy spending that much on insurance. Believe me the Ibiza aint that good that its worth £3275 insurance bill!!!! I wouldnt expect to pay that for a Mclaren F1

True that it was maybe a bit unusual to have bought a brand new car as soon as I passed my test, but when you consider that I've been saving up for the last ten years, it's not too bad! Anyway I would only ever have one chance of getting a new car when I passed my test, so I took it. Not many people (except mega rich folk) can say their first car was brand new! Snob eh? :bleh: My brother who is an extreme petrol head (he's had a XR3i, Cosworth, ST24) was amazed earlier on today when he had a shot. He had been slagging me non-stop when I told him I was going to buy a diesel. Now he's totally changed his tune, he said I should remove the TDi badge, but I reckon it's better and more fun to let the losers read it just before their vision is covered with all my soot!!!! Great Fun :roflmao:

Hey, I'm not rich... far from it!! but...
£2200 spent on a brand new moped when I was 16
£9000 spent on a brand new Clio when I was 17
£10500 spent on a brand new diesel Clio when I was 19
£17000 spent on a brand new LCR when I was 21...

...Isn't finance great?! ;) If I don't spend too much, I'll own my car in 18 months...

Wahey! Another member with a 100 BHP Tdi!!! thought I was the only one. Cannot explain exactly what a difference a tiny little chip can make to your entire driving experience. Im amazed how something so small can make such a big difference, but it does. I was slightly sceptical to say the least, but after reading these forums and such like, i just thought Id give it a go, and what a go it is! You got to do it and really thats that.
