View Full Version : 225 conrods on a 150 bottom end? Possible?
Hello all,
I was wondering if it was possible to attach 225 rods to a 150 bottom end any ideas? I believe the only differences in the two are the rods and the pistons. So could one fit the 225 rods to a 150 bottom end and pistons? This would make the 150 bottom end good for over 300lbs/ft?
What's the point, the 150's gearbox isn't up to 300bhp!
:D

Why would you want to put weaker rods in your motor?
ever seen both sets of rods side by side? ;)

Is that right in all cases Bill ? The rod bolts in my 2001 AWT engine look much weaker than the through bolts in the 225 BHP rods. Must admit I didn't have rods side by side to compare them. I think it depends on the year, the newer low BHP engines have crap rods.
In any event, they are interchangeable are they not ? Although having said that the 150 BHP bottom end is good for 300 + anyway.
Be interesting to see the pics you have.

No pics.. Was shown all this by Mike @ Jabba last year...
Rods side by side... later 225 rods aint as durable looking as earlier ones, which look more like 16v ones.. (which I know have been used on 20VT high power motors with success)
Smaller small end on later ones and pretty thin spindly rods.
ARP for bolts.... job done.

The 150/156bhp bottom end is good for 320lb/ft on stock rods/pistons, according to Mike at Jabba.
What's the point, the 150's gearbox isn't up to 300bhp!
The gearbox is torque limited not power limited. Jabbas Ibiza is around 350bhp with a stock gearbox, but the torque is around 280-290lb/ft I think.
I'm sure Bill has more accurate numbers.

Situation is my 210HP 2000 model S3 motor melted... rods are fine. I may do a "cheap" fix and get a 150 bottom end (As I have one available cheap) and was thinking if I could move the rods across that would make the motor pretty strong. I assume the pistons are alright - and assuming I fuel the damn thing this time round it wont be a pretty molten lump glued to the bore walls.
So... could it be done? And being the 210 motor do I have the extra strong rods?

S3 motor melted?
lean?
Not 100% sure just yet... but I assume it was lean.
I had a vacuum leak which resulted in excessive popping on over run (Running rich being a MAP sensor - G60 Management - and so I assume that on boost it would be lean.) I found the vacuum leak and pluged it. Popping stopped.
Long drive that weekend, started popping on and off... checked the vacuum leak and it was still plugged. Tempted by an M3 up the M40 chased him... blue smoke - bye bye engine... more importantly molten piston into the IHI... bye bye IHI! :-o :censored: :censored: :censored:
Not a happy bunny!

I feel for ya..
Been there too.
Bye bye hybrid IHI :censored: when Golfy dropped a valve @ Donnington last year. Byebye most other engine components too! cyl head, pistons, turbo :(
With the IHI can it be re-built? Sounds like you were in my boat!! how much did Jabba cahrge for 1900cc bottom end re-build? Ignoring the head/turbo... just basic motor work?
I assume that is why you went 1900cc? I could do a hybrid IHI re-build I suppose, but that would cost near new and I will never really need that much from it... std the one I hve is good for 430HP apparently - assuming I can get it re-built.

You need to speak to Elton @ Jabba 01733 211779 for 1.9 prices.
It was the reason I went 1.9 yes... scored block :(
mike rebuilt my IHI from a bunch of other parts he had. not sure what was reused and what was binned.
regards
bill

Been in e-mail contact with Elton actually. 1900cc is £2500 bottom end only, no install. Turbo he said he would have to have a look at and see how bad the damage is.
2l he said the 2l crank is too weak to take big power and is not suggested. Looks like I will go 1900cc... or I could just send the block off to Audi and get a brand new std bottom end for 1K... how tempting is that???? A receipt for a brand spankers bottom end HAS TO BE WORTH A FORTUNE in re-sale if I ever went that way.
Anyway, will keep you posted on what I do. I have asked the guys to send my turbo in - they quoted £300... but not seen the turbo yet and I am not sure they are aware it is Roller Bearing.
