View Full Version : Blown Speaker?

So there I was driving home last night - music on not too loud (About 10 on the Aura I think doing 80mph on the motorway), and the music starts to sound really muffled from the drivers side front door...
"That sounds weird" I am thinking, and then I get the burning "plasticky" smell of a blown speaker... I feel slightly pissed because the card is only 3 weeks old and I have not really had the music turned up that loud..
However I get in my car this morning to go and have a look at it, and the main front drivers door speaker is fine - as are all the others....
Anyone else had a weird occurrences with speakers? There was a definite very strong smell exactly the same as you get when a speaker is blown - I've blown a couple of speakers on my PC at home and they smelt EXACTLY the same.
If any speakers are blown - are they likely to get replaced under warranty?
I know this post is more of a rhetorical one than anything - but any comments would be appreciated...
A very confused Stevo.

If you blow a speaker it will suddenly stop making any noise and not smell of anything (all you do is melt one of the wires in the coil). It sounds more like (from your description) that a capacitor blew (strong acrid smell, bit like burning rubber but with an electrical feel to it???). This is quite common on PCs (sometimes even accompanied by smoke).
Now the thing about capacitors these days is that they can self-heal!!! It's all super-complicated and to do with electrolite type etc but they can fix themsleves. Only problem is - if it's blown once it will probably do it again.
Get the dealer to look at the radio!

It could be the tweeter in the dash that's gone. I'd get it checked because it could be something unrelated to the stereo. Is the leon fuse box under the stearing wheel like on the old Beezas/Cordys???

The Leons main fuse box is on the driver side, behind the end plate of the dash board, the bit between the door and dash.
You'll need to unscrew it, or pop it off, cant remember without looking.
The fuses are there.
I doubt you've blown the speaker unless it was a faulty one, id get it replaced under warranty if it has gone.
Im running my Alpine against my standard speakers, though i dont think id push it too much, thats a 60W x 4 amp in the headunit, and they sound fine, but i havn't pushed it anymore than 20 to do so would be curtains fro the speakers im sure. http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/biggrin.gif

At volume level 10, on the Aura, I doubt very much that you could blow a speaker. But, the instruction book for my Aura states that you can set the volume to increase along with the road speed that you are doing at any given time. If this is the case with your unit then the volume would have exceeded level 10 at 80mph (just a thought). My Aura was set up to do this when I picked up the car and I have since changed it back to manual.

Just in case you haven't already- adjust your fader & balance to all the speakers individualy to see if they sound different?
good luck

Hi again..
I'd have to agree with Rich... I definitely had the burning smell - and it seemed fine again the following morning.. I used the balance and fader just to concentrate on each "door" if you like - and they all sounded fine.
The automatic volume I have disabled anyway - 'cos it gets right on my tits!
Thing is OK at the moment so I will leave it be... I keep meaning to ring Amethyst to see if they can fit a better sounding horn to the car to replace that really shite one, so perhaps I could get them to look at it then for me *grin* (SWINNY, FLAPPER are you lstening?!!)
