View Full Version : turbo kit for 1.4
hey, as i've only recently turned 18, i wont be able to get a decent car for the next 2/3 years. so i was thinking about adding a turbo to my 1.4 ... i know i can get one, and it costs around £2500 and adds 50hp. i'm guessing it'll come with an intercooler and all the parts that i need. but i was wondering if i'll be able to upgrade the intercooler and other parts for it?
so in other words, i was just wondering if anyone knows of compatible/upgradeable parts for this turbo kit..
the kit can be found here - http://www.tsr-performance.com/news.html#product
its on that page somewhere :)
i've emailed them, but haven't got a reply yet
eh?
Adding a turbo to your car will put the insurance up to more than the price of a standard 20vt, and the cost of the kit would probably be more than selling your car and buying a 20vt, so getting yours turbo'd on the basis of cost is a mistake I'm afraid.
well the insurance company wont have to find out for a while... plus i wont get insured on the 20vt until i'm 21 wont i?? :S or have i been misinformed?
Would not recommend not telling your insurance comapny as your insurance is effectively invalidated by modding and not informing. AS for getting insured before being 21 try elephant as I got inusred on my 20vt at 20 and I think a few others did also (not necessarily with elephant). Worth trying a few specialists as well such as adrian flux as they would have insured me on a golf vr6 at 20 which is faster and more pwerful than the 20vt. Good luck deciding what to do.
you guys are obviously right :P and i will probably get a 20vt in a year or so if possible. just wondering madmax, but how much is your insurance when you were 20? cos i want to know how much it'll cost, hopefully by that point i'll have 2 years no claims bonus aswell.. i'm guessing this turbo kit is rather pointless :) i just hope that if i do get a 20vt, that it'll be like my 1.4, because i love it!
1) Adding a turbo isn't in the same class as a panel filter....
2) Not sure it'd work with the drive by wire throttle body
Insurance will depend on so many things. Have you got any NCB? It will also depend on your area in which you live, any claims, mileage each year, value of the car etc to name but a few. I was paying around £1300 at 20 doing 10k, car on driveway. Best thing to do is ring around a lot. It is all a matter of progression as well. At 18 I was dremaing of turbos and bigger horsepower cars than my 1.4 polo. To be honest at 18 I was definitely not ready to drive a 20vt. I seriously think you should stick with your car for another year or so and save up some money so yo can find a nice example and then think about changing. Try and get some NCB as this will help bring the cost down. This is only my opinion by the way so choose to ignore me if you want. Good luck anyhow
it's probably a good idea madmax. hopefully by the time i'm ready to buy a 20vt, i will have 2/3 years NCB. at the moment, i'm paying £2000 a year insurance for my car! its the cheapest i could find with direct line, but it includes everything like breakdown cover anywhere in europe and free hire car. i think its also because i was 17 when i got insuranced on my car. nevermind though!
i'll stick with this, i've got NOS and the induction kit, which will do for now. i'll just get my car looking good :).
I hope you told the insurance about the NOS!!! AND the 17's!
I'm with directline and they wanted £160 extra for adding my 17's.
Don't forget that if you haven't declared obvious things like the wheels and you get a producer from the boys in blue, if you show your insurance document that shows it to be standard, they ain't going to be too pleased!
i'm getting the NOS taken off my car soon anyways, because i have 6 months left on my warranty, so i want to keep that and probably put the NOS back on later. i'll tell my insurance company about my alloys, i didn't realise that it would have such an impact on the insurance.. its stupid
Yeah, just thought I'd warn you. When I was 17 I had aftermarket alloys on my car and crashed it. I hadn't told directline about the wheels and when the car was inspected, they said my insurance was invalid:(
Luckilly, after a lot of discussion, they agreed to let me pay the difference (£60) to the premium on top of the excess before they paid out. That was very hard mind you!!
that is pretty lucky! i'm gonna get a list of the mods and see what it will had to my insurance..

Hi There
Surprising 'Admiral' were really good for me as i have an induction kit, 16" Alloys, under car neon, new rear clusters and a good install and only 1 years 'no claims' and insurance is only £500ish fully comp per year.
Which is not bad seeing as only 23 when took out this years insurance.
cheers

Cus, you should let them know (if you already hadn't) about all that ICE. I'm with Directline and my policy allows upto £1,000, i suspect yours is slightly more than that looking at your sig. If that lot goes you'll be gutted not just skint, chances are that if someone wants it, they'll nick the car too. Just beware of not informing your insurance company of your mods mate, they don't take kindly to it at all.
cus, it sucks being under 25,but adrian flux, performance insurance specialist dont add on anything for wheels, exhausts and induction kits.well they didnt for me anyhow.
supprised you've got 50 bhp nos on a 1.4 though!

My Cordie is cheaper to insure than that (I'm 24) - if i had kept the Ibiza the renewal for that was sub £200.
£500 even with mods is wrong.

Hi Cus
i agree as i had to inform the insurance company near enuff straight away as knowing my luck in i had not some would have crashed into me and i would have invalid insurance!!
Lucky Admiral did me a good deal.

cheers for all the posts, i'm gonna inform my insurance company later today of all the mods, and if it goes up too much, then i guess my mods will be coming off :(
be warned they may cancel your insurance....
i'll get a quote for the stuff i have, and if they say that they cant insure me, i'll take most of te parts off
what I mean is that they're fairly untrusting. ie - if you phone up & say "i'd like to fit XXX" then they'll take it as red that you have done, or will do.
well if thats the case, i'll i'l hav to go to adrian flux. but i'll ring directline and tell them about what i've done , i'm getting the NOS taken off, so i wont tell them about that

No, tell them you are thinking of fitting X, Y & Z and that you would like to know how much it would increase your premium by. If its lots, have a luagh with them and say you won't bother. Then go out and remove them - if you have a crash, they WILL look for those mods you mention.
Whatever you do, DO NOT tell them you have already done the mods
